Chapter 317

shape of her eyes. The curve of her cheek. Even the dark strands of hair clinging to her pale skin.

“I think I’ve seen her before,” Luciana whispered, more to herself than to the others.

Charlie glanced up from where he was checking the girl’s pulse again.

“You know her, Your Highness?”

Luciana slowly shook her head, her eyes unable to leave the girl’s face.

“No…”

At least, she didn’t think she did. Yet, the feeling wouldn’t leave her. It only settled deep inside her chest, whispering that this girl wasn’t a stranger.

Alice crouched beside them, carefully pulling the girl’s-soaked sleeve away from one shoulder to inspect another

wound.

“Oh my…” Her voice was barely audible.

Luciana followed her gaze.

The young woman’s body was littered with fading bruises in every stage of healing. Some were days old… others. looked fresh.

Her chest tightened, and she had to swallow the bitter feeling she felt in her throat. The damage went deeper than they could have imagined. Upon further examination, they found whip marks across her back, cuts lined her forearms, her wrists… Luciana had to look away.

“Her wrists looked burned,” Alice commented.

“Silver,” Luciana said, a bitter edge to her tone. “Whoever did this to her kept her restrained.”

“Why would they do this?” Alice asked, tears filling her eyes.

“It doesn’t matter,” Luciana said as she stood. “We need to get her to the clinic. The healers will be able to help her.”

“What? You want to bring her back with us?” Charlie asked, astonished.

“Of course,” Luciana said, narrowing her eyes. “We can’t leave her here.”

“Shouldn’t we notify your father first? You know how he feels about outsiders. For all we know, she could be an escaped prisoner.”

“Charlie, look at her. This girl isn’t going to do any harm to us. We can’t just leave her here. Once we get back, I will notify my father myself. He’s too preoccupied with the Kingsleys’ royal wedding to care that we are taking care of a sick girl anyway.”

Charlie still looked uncertain, but he nodded.

“As you wish.”

He carefully slipped one arm beneath the unconscious girl’s shoulders and the other beneath her knees before lifting her with surprising gentleness. She barely weighed anything, it seemed, and it only made Luciana’s chest grow tighter.

As Charlie started to walk back toward the carriage, Alice stood still, her face growing pale. It caused Luciana to pause as well.

“What is it?”

“I can feel it,” she whispered, her eyes meeting Luciana’s. “She’s carrying a life.”

“She’s pregnant?”

Alice nodded slowly.

Alice had a hidden gift that she could sense and even communicate with souls. When she said she could sense life inside of this girl, she meant she could sense another soul.

Luciana swallowed and then followed after Charlie. She climbed back into the carriage first, moving to one side so Charlie could lay the woman across the cushioned seat. The moment the girl’s head rested against Luciana’s lap) another strange feeling washed over her.

Why did this girl feel like family to her?

That didn’t make any sense because she seemed like a common wolf. In fact, Luciana couldn’t even sense this girl’s wolf. But that could have been because of the wolfsbane Luciana could smell in her system.

“Please, hurry, Charlie. I’m not sure how much longer she has,” Luciana said, her voice laced with worry. Alice slid into the empty seat across from her and shut the carriage door just as the horses started to move forward on Charlie’s instructions.

Within an hour, they were entering the capital. The girl was still breathing, and Luciana was trying to keep her as warm as possible, but she was growing colder by the minute. Just as the clinic came into view, a soft moan came from the girl’s lips, drawing Luciana’s attention to her.

She watched as the girl’s eyes fluttered open; they were unfocused, and yet they were fixed on her.
