Chapter 40

“Calm down,” I said to Warren, my eyes trained on his face as his canines snapped in the direction of the girt. “Please, you don’t want to kill her. You are just angry. Your Majesty, you must get control back.”

“I hate that color,” Warren hissed, his words rattling my brain. His voice was so loud in my head that I had to fight from wincing. “She must die. She is in danger.”

“She’s not. She’s only a maid,” I tried to tell him. “Please, Warren. Bring Leopold back. Release your control.”

“She dies,” Warren said, his voice layered with conviction.

His hand tightened around his sword, clasped to his hip, and my heart nearly beat out of my chest for what I knew was about to happen.

“Cecilia!” Landon tried to warn me again.

“Get her out of here!” I yelled to Landon, pressing my hand harder against Warren’s chest, trying desperately to keep him where he was. “It’s her dress. It’s triggering him. Get her out.”

Warren released his sword, nearly knocking me backwards in the process. His mind is not registering that I’m standing right there. I could hear the girl screaming, but I tried to focus on Warren instead. I wrapped my arms around his middle, trying to hold on with all of my strength as if my life depended on it.

I knew he wouldn’t go as far as to kill me, but he might accidently hurt me.

He swung his sword, though it didn’t even come close to me.

“Warren… please. Just listen to me. You don’t want to kill her. I beg of you to stop!” I tried again, my words cracking even in my own mind.

I felt the tension in Warren’s body, the way his biceps flexed against my cheek as I held onto him. I tried not to pay attention to the heat that radiated off him or the intoxicating scent that consumed me.

I barely even noticed Landon grabbing the girl by the wrist and yanking her out of the room. She was in tears as he guided her away, trying to get her as far away from Warren as possible.

“I just wanted to get his attention,” I heard her crying. “Cecilia was a slave too…. And now she’s his concubine. If it could happen to her… I thought maybe it could happen to me too.”

“Let’s get you back to the slaves’ quarters,” Landon said, his tone low, yet calm for someone who just witnessed his kind lose control.

It just shows that Landon was used to this kind of thing happening, and I probably should get used to it, too.

I thought for sure that Warren would have gone after them once he realized she was no longer in the room. But he didn’t. He stood frozen in the doorway, and when I looked up at him, I realized he was staring down at me.

“I have hurt you?” Warren asked, putting his sword back in its holster.

I pulled back, letting my arms fall from around him and suddenly feeling the far too close to him for comfort.

“No,” I told him, clearing my throat and stepping away from him, needing that distance from him.

However, the only direction I could go was backwards… into his bedroom. Warren stepped into his room as well and closed the door.

“I am sorry, Cecilia. I never meant to hurt you,” he said, his voice sounding forlorn.

“You didn’t,” I assured him. I showed him my hands and arms. “See? No damage”

He stared me with his eyes for a moment before I saw his body relax.

“Good,” he said, sounding relieved. “I do not like the color red. Seeing her dress angered me.”

“I know,” I tell him. “And you ahnost killed her.”

“But I didn’t.”

I let my own body relax.

“No, you didn’t.”

We were quiet for a moment.
