Vivian stood stagnant for a moment, shock clear on her face. Her cheek was growing redder by the second from the force of the slap. Her eyes turned to slits, and just when I thought she was going to hit me back, I heard hurried footsteps near the gate.
Then, I heard Landon’s breathless voice.
“Miss Cecilia. You are needed. The King requires your attention!”
Vivian and the girls who backed her up all burst out laughing. Landon looked distressed as his eyes found mine, and I worried that he had seen me slap Vivian. My hand still stung from the impact, but I wasn’t sorry for giving her what she deserved.
I wasn’t going to let Landon make me feel as such.
“You are in trouble now,” Vivian said, folding her arms across her chest and smirking. “You should know by now that the King has eyes and ears all over this palace. He saw you slapping me, and now you’re in deep shit.”
“So stupid,” another girl behind her laughed. “Should have just kept your head down, little Omega.”
My cheeks burned, and my chest tightened. But I tried not to let that show on my face. I gave Claire and her friends a short nod. It was genuinely nice to meet them, and I had no ill will toward them. They were kind and seemed genuine, and I would have to seek them out again later.
Landon wouldn’t let me speak. He only grabbed my arm and pulled me along with him. I truly felt like Vivian was right. I was in deep shit.
My heart hammered in my chest even faster as we left the gardens and hurried down the walkway and towards the palace doors.
“Please… let me explain,” I tried to say, my voice hoarse.
“King Leopold needs you,” Landon said, the urgency in his voice making me furrow my brows. “I can’t stop him… he’s gone mad.”
Realization dawned on me, and my chest tightened even more.
Warren.
“What has happened?” I asked, trying to keep up with him.
He opened the back door of the palace, and we hurried inside. The corridor was small, but we were only there for a moment before he opened another door that led into a larger space.
“His wolf is out of control,” Landon explained, his words coming out hurriedly. “I went to check on him… and I could hear him growling and yelling. There’s a girl trapped in his room, and if we don’t hurry, he will kill her.”
I sucked in a sharp breath, my body shaking.
We made our way to the stairwell; Landon took the stairs two at a time. I wasn’t as coordinated, but he still held onto me, making me nearly fall over my feet. I understood the urgency, but these really weren’t running shoes.
Once we got to Leopold’s floor, I could already hear Warren seething and growling in my mind.
“I hate red!!!!! Kill Kill Kill!!!!”
Fear clung to me like a cape, and suddenly I was running even faster, my shoes coming off my feet in the process and giving me extra speed. I could see Leopold…or rather Warren… standing in front of his bedroom door, his back facing me. I couldn’t see around him, but from what Landon had told me and from what Warren had been yelling, there was a girl in his room.
“Why is she here? Why does she wear that??” Warren continued to snarl. “Must kill her!”

I knew I was the only one who could hear him. I had to do something and fast. So, without thinking, I wedged my way in front of him, trying to put myself between him and that girl.
I got a glimpse of her when did so. She was a small brunette in a red dress, her entre body trembling. Her carefully orchestrated makeup was smeared all over her face, and I’m sure her hair was pin-straight at some point, but looked frizzy and a mess from a struggle.
