Chapter 57

It was only a couple of corridors away from where I was standing, through a large set of double doors.

My mouth dropped open at the sight of the library, it was huge with multiple floors. Spical staircases stood tall on both sides of the library, and giant floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the garden.

There must have been thousands of books in this library.

I wondered how much time Leopold spent in this library and if he ever read any of these books. I wanted to explore his book collection, but my urge to hear more about my mother overpowered my urge to look through books.

Jax led me through the library until we reached a table in the far back. Other tables were closer to where we initially stood, so I felt a little odd sitting somewhere this private, when the room itself was already private. But I had to remember that Jax was harmless and he would never do anything to hurt me.

I sat down at the table, and Jax sat beside me, a little too close for my liking, but I forced that nasty feeling away and took a deep

breath.

“So, what did you find out?” I asked, wanting this conversation to be done and over with.

“Were you aware that your mother was pregnant?” He asked, making my heart stop in my chest.

I remembered her being unwell; I remembered her being on bed rest and going to the doctors numerous times. I remember she got a little bigger, but not big enough to pass as pregnant. I was still so young at the time, but I think I would have known for sure if she was pregnant.

Wouldn’t I have?

“I can tell from your face that you didn’t,” Jax said, eyeing me carefully. “Well, she was. I was able to get a hold of her medical records.”

He opened the top part of his coat and pulled out a piece of paper, handing it to me. My mom’s name was listed at the top, labeled “Medical Records.”

My breath caught in my throat at the sight of it.

“How did you get this?” I whispered.

“I have a way of getting my hands on things,” he said, lifting one shoulder “The details don’t matter. But you can see those are real reports from the hospital. It has a raised seal to prove it.”

I nodded, brushing my finger over the seal; there was no doubt in my mind that it was real.

“She was 7 months pregnant?” I asked, staring at the report. “And she died from premature labor?”

“Yeah,” Jax said, is eyes never leaving my face. “And after doing a little more digging, there were some witnesses who saw your mom and Diana having an altercation just before she was sent to the hospital.”

My heart stopped in my chest, and my eyes snapped to his.

“What?”

“I’m not sure what the altercation was about… but whatever it was, it made your mom go into early labor, and she died.”

I felt sick to my stomach; I wanted to vomit on the spot.

“And the baby?” I asked, afraid to know the answer, but knowing I needed to.

“He died a few hours later.”

My heart broke in an instant.

“I had a brother?” I whispered, tears filling my eyes.

“Yeah… for a couple of hours you did.”

I wiped the tears off my cheeks with my hand and put the report on the table, sliding it towards Jax. I knew now more than anything that Diana was the cause of my mother’s death. I wasn’t sure what she did… but I knew she did something to cause this early labor.

“Thanks for finding out this information, Jax,” I told him as I stood. “I’m going to go now. I need to process this.”

Just as I was about to walk away, Jax grabbed my hand.

“I’m sorry to have given you this troubling news, Cecilia,” he said, his eyes remorseful. “I know it’s not easy. I’m here if you need to talk… You know that, right?”

I forced a smile.

“Yeah, I know. Thanks,” I say, and I was about to turn and walk away, but his grip on my hand tightened.

“Wait, there was something else I wanted to talk to you about.”

I raised my brows at him.
