The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 58

Chapter 58

Cecilia’s POV

“You’re lying,” I told him, folding my arms across my chest. I finally managed to pullay arm away from him, and I rubbed the tender spot that he was holding onto a little too hard “He would have mentioned if he was having a consort ceremony.”

Or at least Warren would have told me. But I don’t say that part out loud.

“Am I?” He asked, standing to his feet and narrowing his eyes at me. “You can ask any of the other concubines. I heard them talking about it. They’re all excited to have a chance to be his wife and queen.”

There was a jab of pain in my chest when he said those words; a pain I couldn’t really explain even if I wanted to. I stared up at Jax, and I could see the desperation in his eyes and the pure worry that he was having for me.

Jax was my friend, and he cared about me; that much was evident. But he was crossing a line, and I really didn’t want him to go too far past that line, or else he might not be able to return.

“Look, Jax,” I said, my voice softening just a beat. “I appreciate the fact that you are looking out for me and don’t want me to get hurt, but I promise you, my relationship with the King isn’t a concern. I’m his concubine. It’s a job. At the end of the day, I’m getting paid. Once he finds his mate, he will release the other concubines and me with money, and we can return home. That’s the deal. Whether he ends up having a wife or not, it doesn’t matter.”

Even though I said those words with confidence, I didn’t feel the same confidence. Instead, that pain in my chest increased to the point where I had to rub it with my fingers to relieve some of the dull ache.

Jax stared at me for a moment longer.

“You’re sure?” He asked. “Because you’re right. I do care about you, Cecilia. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

“I know,” I tell him. “And I appreciate that. But you don’t need to worry. I can take care of myself. I have been my whole life. Now, I should be going. But it was nice talking with you, Jax. Oh.. and thank you for finding out that information about my mother. It means a lot to me.”

I almost forgot about what Jax had told me about my mother. She died from premature labor, and I had a baby brother for a few hours. How had I not known about that?

It only made my chest ache even more.

The thought of Diana being the last one to speak to my mother before she went into early labor made my need to get home and find out the truth even more urgent. I needed to do whatever I could to find these answers, even if it meant becoming only a

concubine.

When I returned to my room, I froze just before reaching the door.

Anna was sneaking out of my room, shutting the door behind her, and looking around to make sure nobody was looking. It made me furrow my brows and fold my arms across my chest.

Her eyes found mine, and then they widened, having been caught.

“Sorry, I was just cleaning up in your room,” she said, giving me an awkward laugh. “I was trying to be quiet.”

“It looks more like you were sneaking out,” I said, raising my brows. “What reason would you have to sneak out if all you were doing was cleaning?”

She was quiet for a moment.
