Chapter 60

Cecilia’s POV

The Consort Selection Ceremony:

Landon’s words buzzed in my ears. It was real Leopold was actually having a Consort Selection Ceremony. My entire heart felt heavy in my chest, and I barely registered Landon still standing in front of me, his eyes narrowed.

“Did you hear me?” He asked, and from his tone, I could tell that it wasn’t for the first time. “Why aren’t you at Etiquette training? It’s mandatory for all concubines, including his favored one… especially his favored one.”

My cheeks burned.

“Nobody told me,” I said. I felt like I was out of breath and a little light-headed. “The King is having a Consort Selection Ceremony?”

Landon frowned, his eyes assessing me for a moment longer before his shoulders relaxed.

“Yes, he is,” Landon answered, his words feeling like a punch in the stomach. “King Leopold decided it was time to have a queen. He’s hoping that during this selection ceremony, his true mate will be there. Naturally, she would be the one he would choose. However, if she doesn’t show up, he’s most likely to choose a concubine, which means you all need to be prepared.”

He stared at my face, and I felt like I was a million worlds away at this point. I had no idea what to say or how to act in this moment. I wasn’t sure what to feel. Why wouldn’t Warren tell me about this?

Then again, did it really matter? I already know what this was, and I signed up for it. I could have told them the truth from the get -go and have them release me, but I chose to stay because Warren requested that I do. I promised him that I would stay until Leopold found his mate, and that’s what I intended to do.

“You really didn’t know?” Landon asked, raising his brows. “The other concubines should have spread the word to you.”

My heart stopped in my chest, and I shook my head.

“They hadn’t said a word.”

I hadn’t really seen any of them today, not even the girls that I have grown close to during the tea party. I thought about Vivian and her influence on the other concubines, and I had to stifle a groan. This had her name written all over it.

“Well, it’s not optional. You need to get there pronto. Obviously, you won’t be able to get fully dressed and appropriate. So, do the best you can, and I’ll escort you down to the ballroom.”

“Alright. Give me a few minutes,” I said before I stepped back into my room and closed the door behind me.

Without another thought, I went to my closet and grabbed the first dress that I could reach. Landon was right; I didn’t have time to get fully dressed. My hair was soaked, and I still had soap on my body. I completely forgot that I was in nothing but a towel.

I let out a breath and went back into the bathroom, where I drained the tub and quickly got dressed. I put my wet hair into a ponytail and frowned when I saw my almost-washed-out appearance in the mirror.

I turned and walked out of the bathroom and back towards the door. When I opened it and stood in front of Landon, his eyes widened when he saw me.

“Oh, dear heavens,” he murmured.

But he shook his head and turned, walking down the hallway. I closed the door behind me and followed after him. When we reached the ballroom, I could hear the chatter of the other women. They were gathered around in the ballroom, each of them wearing gorgeous gowns and practically glowing with excitement.

An older woman was standing in front of them, also wearing a gown, and I don’t remember ever seeing her about, so I doubted she was a concubine. Plus, she seemed a little too old for the King.

The moment we stepped into the ballroom, most of their eyes turned in my direction. The first person I saw was Vivian. She had a shit-eating grin on her face, and her arms were folded across her chest. Her friends were standing behind her, snickering. At that moment, I already knew that Vivian had everything to do with this.
