Chapter 65

“Pretend I am a Duchess, Madam Isa said. “And you are hosting a small formal event in my honor.”

I nod, curtsying slightly, keeping any movements controlled.

I turned towards the table, my eyes finding the placements, and I frowned.

The spoon was placed incorrectly, and the napkin was folded in the wrong direction. They were small errors, but something I noticed right away. My brows furrowed when I caught sight of the sugar dish… it was shifted to the left instead of the right. It made the whole setting look uneven.

Certainly not something I’d want a duchess to see.

Without a word, I got to work rearranging the table, settling in a way that I knew very well from all the formal dinners I had to attend with my father.

I went through the entire routine of greeting the Duchess before offering her a seat. I took the liberty of pouring the tea myself because a good hostess will put in the effort despite having staff on standby.

I felt the presence before I saw anything, but suddenly, the table jolted, and the teapot nearly fell from my hands. When I looked up, I saw one of Vivian’s friends smirking as she walked by.

With precise control, I adjusted my wrist to prevent myself from spilling any of the tea. I kept a small smile on my face, not allowing Madam Isa to see me falter.

“I apologize for the interruption, Duchess,” I say, my voice soft. “Some women need to watch where they are going when they are in the eyes of royalty,”

My eyes shifted to Vivian’s friend, who scowled in my direction.

Once the tea was poured, I sat down. I ignored Vivian’s snickering at the other end of the table as I tried to keep up a conversation with Madam Isa, acting as though she were royalty.

“Vivian, do you have notes?” Madam Isa asked, turning to look at her, eyes narrowed. “You are quite loud for someone who already had her turn.”

Vivian’s cheeks reddened, but then she glanced at me, and I saw the rage in her eyes forming.

“Actually, I do have some notes,” she said, narrowing her eyes at me. “You’re holding your shoulders too relaxed. A Luna Queen must appear elevated. It shows the room that she’s in charge, and you don’t have what it takes to convince anyone you’re in charge.”

I raised my brows and glanced at Madam Isa.

“May 1?” I asked.

The corner of her lips lifted, and she gave me a nod.

I turned to Vivian.

“In some aspects, you are correct. A Luna must appear elevated when asserting authority,” I say, keeping my voice even. “But while hosting, shoulders remain relaxed to avoid intimidating the guest. Tension suggests hostility.”

The room was quiet, and Vivian’s face was as red as a cherry. I turned back to Madam Isa, who gave me an approving look as I picked up where we left off as if nothing had happened.

Claira, Jasmine, and Cora caught up with me after class. All three of them were laughing about Vivian’s failed stunts. Cora even said she saw Vivian paying off one of the maids to mess up my table placement.
