Cecilia’s POV

The girls looked at one another before turning to me.

“We’ll catch you later, Cecilia,” Jasmine said, giving me a small wave as she turned with the others and continued down the corridor.

I turned to Jax; he looked worried and maybe a little guilty didn’t like that we fought the last time we spoke, and I hoped that maybe we could clear the air. From the way he was standing with his hands in his pockets, could tell that he was thinking the same thing.

“Hey, Jax,” I said as he stopped a few feet away from me.

“Hi, Cecilia,” he said, his eyes meeting mine. “I’m sorry to bother you; I just wanted to talk to you about yesterday.”

I nodded, already guessing as much.

We started walking side by side; our strides were slow. For a moment, we allowed the silence to stretch between us. But then he stopped moving, and he looked at me.

“I’m sorry,” he finally said.

I stopped too so that I could look up at him.

“I know you are,” I tell him. “And it’s okay.”

He shakes his head, his gaze soft.

“No, it wasn’t,” he murmured. “I shouldn’t have said what I said.. at least not like that. I was only trying to protect you…”

My cheeks reddened.

“I know, Jax,” I assured him. “You don’t have to say it-”

“Cecilia, I still think you’re making a big mistake by being his concubine,” Jax said, his eyes almost pleading. “I know I came off strong yesterday, but what I said was true. You deserve better than this.”

“A funny thing about apologies is when you say them, you typically don’t repeat the same thing you’re apologizing for. Otherwise, it defeats the purpose,” I stated, folding my arms across my chest. “What was the point of saying anything at all if you were just going to go back on it later?”

“I’m not trying to go back on anything. I’m sorry for how harsh I sounded, but I’m not sorry for what I said. I don’t want to see you getting hurt. Let me get you out of here and protect you. I can help you get revenge on your family, so you’ll never have to deal with them again.”

I shake my head.

“You’re not listening to me, Jax. Revenge is not what I’m after, and I’m not doing anything wrong. I won’t have you make ne feel like I am.”

I started to walk away, having heard enough of what he had to say, but his words stopped me.

“Let me take you away from here,” he said, desperation clear in his voice. “We can start over, Cecilia. I can take care of you, and we can be together. You don’t need the King… I can love you the way you deserve.”

My heart stopped in my chest. I wasn’t sure what to say or what to do. I had never heard Jax speaking like this before. I didn’t even think I was the kind of girl who’d ever be on his radar. I had to be honest, if this were a few years ago, I probably would have been putty in his hands. But right now, I’m just sad for him.

We can go somewhere that nobody knows us and start over again.”

“Jax,” I said, my voice coming but softer than intended.
