Chapter 67

“Having secret meetings, are we?” She asked, harrowing her eyes. “What were you speaking to Jax about?”

I felt my cheeks reddening.

“It’s not your business,” I tell her, trying to keep my tone as even as possible.

I tried to walk around her, but she stepped in front of rue.

“You two looked awfully cozy a minute ago,” she said, pressing her lips into a thin line. “You wouldn’t be doing something against the rules… would you?”

I looked up at her, confused.

“Against the rules?”

“As the King’s favored concubine, you’d think you’d be fluent in the rules by now. The Kings’ concubines aren’t to flirt or date… or screw… or other until after the contract ends,” she recited, her eyes never leaving mine. “And I just saw you and Jax clearly in an intimate position.”

“We weren’t,” I said before I could stop myself. “We were just talking. Jax is nothing more than a friend.”

“A friend who tells you that he loves you and wishes to run away with you?” She asked, mischief sparkling in her eyes. “Oh, you are in deep shit.”

“Vivian-”

“You are a slut, Cecilia. And pretty soon, everybody is going to know about it!” She let out a bark of laughter, drawing the attention of some who had wandered by.

She started down the hallway, and I went after her, my heart pounding in my chest. I had no idea what she was about to do, but I knew I had to stop her somehow. But it was too late; her friends were already waiting for her down the hallway, expectantly. She was quick to tell them what she saw, and by the time their ire ached, they were all caught up and laughing at my expense.

The other occupants weren’t far from where they stood as well, and they heard what Vivian was saying. To say they were shocked was an understatement.

“How dare she step out on the king?” one of the girls whispered to another.

“He is going to be pissed. He might even kick her out,” another replied, snickering.

“I bet Vivian will be his next favored concubine,” another said, almost thoughtfully.

The rumors didn’t stop there; everywhere I went, I was hearing whispers. News had spread like wildfire, and there was nothing I could do about it. It was humiliating, and all I wanted to do was go back to my room and curl up under the covers so I could hide from the world.

By the time I reached my room, Landon was standing outside the door… waiting for me.

I froze only a few feet away from him, and he stared at me with the most idiosyncratic look, which left no doubt that he heard the rumors.

“Landon-”

I started to say, but he held his hand up, stopping me.

“It’s not me you need to explain yourself to,” he murmured. “The King is waiting for you in his room.”

My chest tightened, and I swallowed the lump in my throat. Without a word, I followed after him down the hallway until we reached King Leopold’s room. Landon opened the door without knocking, which led me to believe he truly had been waiting for

me I hesitated outside the door for a moment, trying to steady my racing heartbeat.

Once I stepped into the room, my eyes inimiedalty found the King’s and I flinched when they narrowed in my direction.

Without taking his eyes off me, he dismissed Landon.

“Leave us.”

“Yes, Your Majesty,” Landon said, bowing his head before he left the room.

I felt suffocated when the door shut, entrapping us in this room. For a moment, it felt as if I couldn’t breathe.
