Chapter 68

Cecilia’s POV

+15 Bonus

Leopold was gone before I could speak a word. He left me alone in his room. My heart was pounding against my chest to the point where I could hardly breathe. I sucked my bottom lip into my mouth, trying to keep it from trembling

I wasn’t going to show weakness here. I wasn’t about to break down in King Leopold’s room.

Without another thought… or at least I tried not to have another thought… I opened the door and stepped out of the room. Landon was also gone; that one, I was a bit more relieved about. I did not doubt in my mind that Landon overheard everything Leopold had said to me, and there was no way I wanted to face him at this moment.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and made my way down the hallway and into my room. Anna was approaching the door around the same time that I was, and she froze once she saw me.

“Oh, good evening,” she said, bowing slightly at me. “I was coming to see if you needed anything. I hadn’t heard from you all day. I came by your room earlier, but you weren’t here.”

I looked at her for a beat too long; there was something about her that just seemed so familiar, but I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me. I thought it was the very first time I had seen her as well; I thought maybe it was just as simple as me seeing her around the pack, considering she was from my pack. But now that I’m looking at her a little longer, I realize that’s not the only way I might know her.

“I was just heading to bed,” I tell her, feeling overly exhausted. “If you’ll excuse me.”

I started to step around her, but she stepped in front of me.

‘Is everything alright? You seem a bit upset,” she says, a frown marring her lips.

forced a smile in her direction.

‘Just very tired,” I tell her. “I’ll see you in the morning, Anna.”

She smiled.

‘Of course,” she said, bowing slightly. “I’ll bring your breakfast in the morning as I always do.”

With that, she spun on her heel and hurried down the hallway. I stared after her for a beat too long, still trying to figure out where I had seen her before. I shook the thought out of my head, though, and went into my room, shutting the door behind me.

took the time to get my sleep attire and prepare for bed. I wondered if Warren would seek me out this evening, or if he was Ictually going to let me sleep. I thought about how angry King Leopold was earlier, and the thought of his wrath made me

hudder.

paused as I started towards the bed, my eyes finding the small folder on the table. I had left that folder there, but what I didn’t eave was the paper inside of it hanging out of the edge. I made sure that the paper was completely covered, and I hadn’t touched t since then.

Which means it was moved.

I grabbed the folder and opened it.

It was still there: my mother’s medical records that Jax had given me.

Anna had to be in my room earlier, cleaning it; she could have knocked it with her hand or whatever she was using to clean it. It doesn’t necessarily mean she was snooping through my things, and she read every word of this document.

My stomach knotted at the very thought of anyone else finding out about my secret.

Seeing these medical reports again, a new rage filled the pit of my stomach, and I had to fight to stop trembling. My mother was
