Chapter 71
The packhouse loomed in the distance, bigger than the palace in a different way. It was less polished and more imposing. Like a beast sleeping with its eyes open.,
I kept to the hedges along the paths, moving between them and the storage buildings, avoiding the patrol lines. My heart raced at everything I heard for footsteps. Every time someone laughed too loudly, and every time a door opened.
I made it to the rear entrance of the packhouse, the one used by servants and staff.
I was almost inside when a voice stopped me cold.
“Long time no see, Sister Dearest.”
I froze.
Sophie stood at the edge of the path, dressed in bright, expensive fabric that gleamed under the setting sun and the rising moon. Her hair was perfectly styled; her lips curved into a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
She looked different than how I remembered her, and my chest tightened at the sight. Everything I knew about her was a lie, too, and I couldn’t wrap my head around any of it. She wasn’t the timid Omega I have come to know as my best friend… she was someone entirely different.
A stranger.
Behind her stood Diana.
My breath hitched when I saw the Luna’s pendant on her dress and the diamond necklace I knew once belonged to my mother. 1 remembered seeing it in her jewelry box when I was growing up. I asked my mother once if I could wear it, and she told me that I could when I was older. I always thought it was so beautiful, and when she died, it was the only thing I wanted from her. My father could keep everything else, but I wanted that necklace because having it meant having a piece of her.
But my father told me the necklace was lost and he couldn’t find it.
It was a lie, too.
He had given that necklace to Diana.
“Goddess, Mom. You were right. It’s even worse than I imagined,” Sophie said, crinkling her nose.
“I told you. She’s nothing but a slave. Discarded already?” Diana asked, the corner of her lips lifting into a devilish smirk. “I’m not surprised that the King found you unfit to wash his toilets. What did you do to deserve to be thrown away? Did the King find you in his bed?”
Sophie snorted at that.
“Don’t be gross, Mother,” she said, shaking her head.
“Where did you get that necklace?” I asked, not bothering to listen to their back-and-forth.
I hadn’t been able to look away from the necklace.
Diana frowned even deeper and wrapped her hands around the necklace’s stone. My mother’s stone.
“Oh, this thing? Your father gave it to me a while back,” she said. “Isn’t it gorgeous?”
“It belonged to my mother,” I said, my voice coming out rough. “You have no right to wear that.”
“It was a gift… I have every right to wear it,” she said, matter-of-factly.
“It belonged to my mother,” I said again, more forcibly this time. “Take it off.”

Diana stepped closer to me, her top lip curling in disgust
“Watch how you speak to me I am the Luna, You are nothing but a discarded slave now. I outrank you in every way. Speak to me like that again, and I’ll be forced to take action,” she said through her teeth, a grow in her words.
“My mother died pregnant,” I said, my voice cracking as heat flooded my cheeks. “She was seven months pregnant. I had a baby brother for a few hours before he too died. She was never supposed to go into labor that early, but she did. That was how she died. But I just found out that right before she went into labor, she had a conversation with you. What did you talk to her about?”
“How dare you accuse me of such things!” Diana growled, her voice booming. “A slave who’s disrespectful to their Luna has no right to work in the packhouse and deserves severe punishment. Guards!!”
On cue, guards, most of whom I recognized, filled the room. Diana stood before me with her arms folded across her chest.
“Take her to the water dungeon and teach her a lesson about respect,” Diana ordered. “It seems she was mistaught and needs
structure.”
They rounded on me before I could process what was even happening. I tried to step away, telling them not to touch me, but they were too quick and too strong. However, I didn’t take it lying down.
