Chapter 8:2
“You want to hang out? Warren asked, sounding surprised.
“Of course, I do,” I tell him. “What kind of question is that?”
“And what would we do if we hung out?”
I frowned.
“Go for a run like we always do,” I told him. “Are you feeling okay?”
I reached over to touch his hand, but he snatched my wrist, keeping me from touching, him. His eyes were filled with alertness at first, and he narrowed them as he stared at me. I got a chill down my spine as he stared back at me.
His brows furrowed like he was thinking about it for a moment, and then he sighed.
“Tired,” he admitted. “I don’t celebrate my birthday. Ever.”
“Then, it’s just a cake. Nothing more. But if I may say… everybody deserves to celebrate their birthday at least once.”
He was quiet for a long moment; I didn’t think he was going to say anything, but then he lifted his gaze to look at ine.
“I hadn’t celebrated my birthday since my mother’s death. I… uh…. Leopold… found her dead on his 5(th) birthday.”
My heart stopped in my chest.
“What?”
Warren nodded, sadness crossing his features.
“He hadn’t celebrated his birthday since,” he continued.
“I’m so sorry,” I said, my voice dropping to a whisper. “I had no idea. It’s no wonder Leopold hates his birthday.”
I couldn’t imagine what that must have been like, finding his own mother dead on the day of his birthday. He was only 5 years
old; no child deserves to go through something like that. Especially not on a happy day.
“Do you usually celebrate your birthday?” He suddenly asked me, breaking the silence between us.
I was surprised by the question; when I looked at him, he gave me an earnost expression, waiting for my answer.
“I used to,” I admitted. “But not these last couple of years. My father and I aren’t really that close, and somewhere along the line, he started to forget.”
“That must have been hard, too.”
I lifted one shoulder.
“Not as hard as finding your mother dead on your birthday,” I tell him. “I’m not sure if that’s something I’d ever get over. I understand now why you hate your birthday. Something like that taints your memories for a lifetime.”
He was quiet, too quiet for Warren, but I knew it was because he was thinking about his mother, and my heart tugged for him I felt Lora stirring, her sadness palpable.
“Why did you go back to your pack?” He asked, his eyes finding mine
“It’s stupid,” I muttered
“Tell me ”
I let out a breath, looking away from him.

“I found out my mother died from excessive bleeding during early labor I didn’t even know she was pregnant. Apparently, the last person she spoke to before she went into labor was my father’s new wife. I didn’t even know my father remarried until recently. I wanted to find out gre information about my mother’s death and figure out what my father knew. I know he’s been keeping things from me…. never imagined my mother’s death would be one of them. I thought he loved her… but now I’m questioning everything.”
He was quiet as he processed what I had told him
“You could have told me. I would have helped you.”
“I know,” I tell him. “I’m sorry that I didn’t. I worried Leopold would find out and try to stop me.”
He stared at me for a beat longer, I wondered what he was thinking, but then he nodded slowly.
“Understood.”
I reached over and touched his hand; af first, he tensed, his eyes darting from my hand to my face and back again.
“Please, Warren. Don’t be upset with me anymore,” I practically beg, “I can’t lose you… You’re my friend, and it would destroy me to lose you.”
