finger? And what happened to your dog allergy?”

“Last year, Elise wanted to adopt a retired military dog. She gave it up in tears because you said you were allergic. Did you forget? And Iceland-”

“Don’t bring that up again!”

Landon’s voice dropped to a growl. “I pulled her out when her leg cramped up in the water. I don’t owe her anything. Stop using that to guilt-trip me.”

Landon had no desire to think about what had happened

in Iceland.

Someone had commented under the video that he was a coward. What kind of man let a woman take his place as a

hostage?

But he’d told Elise not to come.

She was the one who’d insisted…

With the dog tucked under one arm and Joan’s hand in

the other, Landon stormed off.

The poodle sensed Landon’s anger. It planted its front paws on his shoulder, bared its teeth, and barked furiously at Chloe.

Chloe scoffed. “What? You think I forgot about you, you

little mutt?”

Even after getting back to Elise’s apartment, Chloe was still fuming.

She carried the takeout to the small round table on the balcony. Maybe the breeze would help cool her down.

As Elise set out the food, Chloe stood across from her with her hands on her hips, ranting nonstop.

“I swear, I should’ve stayed home today. Of all people, I had to run into Landon and his little side piece. They were all over each other like no one else existed. God, I was pissed.”

Elise didn’t want to hear about either of them, but Chloe clearly needed to vent.

“Okay,” she said gently. “Don’t get so worked up. They’re not, worth it.”

you. How did he end up falling for Joan?” Chloe scoffed. “I guess trash really does find trash.”

“Oh, and they had a dog with them. This creepy little poodle with curly fur. Is that the same one that peed and pooped all over your quilt?”

“Damn it. If I ever see that dog again, I’m poisoning it.”

A shadow passed across the balcony next door.

Chloe suddenly fell silent. “Did someone move into 601?”

Elise glanced toward the large balcony next door. Several new potted plants had appeared, but she didn’t see

anyone.

“Maybe.”

Chloe pulled out a chair and sat down.

“That was fast. They only finished renovating ten days ago, right? Aren’t they worried about formaldehyde poisoning?” She paused. “Guess there’s no pregnant woman living there.”

Elise placed Chloe’s favorite dishes in front of her.

“Gray and white? Probably some single guy, then.” Chloe picked up her fork. “If you run into him, tell him all that formaldehyde might make him infertile.”

Elise laughed. “Stop. You’re ridiculous.”

Chloe suddenly remembered she hadn’t washed her hands. With a smile, she got up and headed to the

bathroom.

Footsteps came from the balcony next door.

Elise looked over without thinking-and found herself staring straight at the man in apartment 601.

Her smile vanished.

No way.

Am I seeing things? How is that Harold?

Harold’s company, Firefly Glow, had interests in digital content, fintech, investment holdings, and more.

He was one of the biggest names in finance.

he could keep track of.

He’s so rich. So why is he living in an apartment this

small?

Elise blinked twice.

He was still there.

Harold stood with the light behind him, tall and imposing, his expression cold and unreadable.

His presence alone made her tense. For a moment, she had no idea what to do.

Then she remembered what Chloe had just said.
