The Bride He Took for Granted

Chapter 53

The dog stopped whining, but it didn’t lift its head. Instead, it curled up even tighter.

“Did he forget to leave you food? Are you hungry?”

Elise looked inside the kennel. There was water, but no food.

She frowned.

“If you’re hungry, lift your head for me, okay? I know your owner.”

As if it understood her, the dog slowly raised its head.

Its wary eyes settled on Elise.

She froze.

The damaged ear. Those eyes.

For a second, she could only stare.

The dog’s injured ear twitched. After watching her for a moment, it lowered its head again.

Then, almost immediately, it looked back at her. 1/8

“B-Blitz?”

The dog barked and immediately struggled out of the kennel.

That was when Elise saw his hind legs.

Both were injured.

He was dragging himself forward with his front legs, his tail wagging hard behind him.

Harold was working through emails in his study when he heard Blitz bark.

He immediately got up, switched on the living room lights, and headed for the balcony.

Blitz was exceptionally gentle. Without a command, he rarely reacted aggressively even when provoked.

A bark like that meant something had gotten him worked up.

“Blitz. Quiet.”

At Harold’s command, Blitz went silent at once.

his tail still wagging nonstop.

Harold followed his gaze.

The balcony next door was empty.

He was about to crouch beside Blitz when the doorbell rang.

Harold went to the door and glanced at the security monitor.

Elise stood outside.

Her long hair had been swept over one side of her face, almost completely hiding her swollen cheek. She was holding a pair of slippers in one hand.

Harold opened the door.

Elise looked strangely uncertain.

“Can I see Blitz?”

Harold raised a brow.

“You know him?”

Elise nodded.

Harold stepped aside.

“Come in.”

With Harold’s permission, Elise changed into the slippers and headed straight for the balcony.

The moment she crouched down, Blitz eagerly pressed his head against her leg.

He tried to get up, as if he wanted to throw himself at her, but his injured hind legs gave out beneath him. He collapsed back onto the floor.

Elise immediately reached out and stroked his head.

Her eyes stung.

“What happened to you?”

Blitz let out a low, pitiful whine.

Harold watched them for a moment, then suddenly understood.

Elise had been the first person who had wanted to adopt Blitz.

The trainer had once mentioned a gentle young woman who had spent several days with him before making her decision.

For a dog who usually carried himself with such quiet

confidence, he had been unusually affectionate with her-always following her around and looking for attention.

But in the end, the woman had backed out of the adoption because her fiancé was severely allergic to dogs.

Elise looked back at Harold.

“How did he get hurt?”

Harold walked over.

“He was hit by a car.”

“What?”

Elise’s heart lurched.

She gently rubbed Blitz’s damaged ear.

“How could you be so careless? You know better than to run into the street.”

“He does.”

Elise looked up.

Hagold continued, “He sensed the danger before anyo e else 3:06

did. A two-year-old had wandered into the street, and Blitz broke free of his leash to get to him.”.

He glanced at the dog.

“Blitz took the hit. The kid walked away without a scratch.”

Elise’s expression softened.

She lowered her head and gently rested her forehead against

Blitz’s.

Harold’s gaze shifted to her face.

With her hair falling forward, he hadn’t noticed it clearly before.

Now he could see the swelling on her left cheek—and the distinct red marks left by someone’s fingers.

His expression changed.

“Did Landon hit you?”

The question came out before he had time to think about it.

Elise paused.

Her hand went instinctively to her cheek, and she avoided his

eyes.
