Chapter 56
Elise woke up twice during the night.
Both times, she went out to the balcony to check on Blitz, worried that his injuries might be keeping him awake.
The second time, Blitz opened his eyes and spotted her through the glass.
Elise immediately put a finger to her lips.
“Shh.”
Then she lowered her hand, motioning for him to lie back down.
Blitz’s big black-and-tan tail thumped against the floor a few times. Then he rested his head back down and blinked sleepily at her.
Elise’s heart melted.
She leaned against the railing, resting her chin in one hand as she watched him for a while.
Only when she started getting sleepy again did she finally go back to bed, already wondering what she should make him for dinner the next day.

After work, Elise put on a mask and stopped by the grocery store to pick up everything she needed for dinner.
She called Chloe and asked if she wanted to come over.
But Chloe said the warehouse was doing inventory for the next few days and she was too busy.
Elise couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed.
Chloe had just asked her to cook for her the day before.
Once she got home, Elise took off her mask and went straight into the kitchen.
She quickly got to work preparing dinner.
For Blitz, she prepared a large bowl of plain shredded chicken, lean ground turkey, rice, pumpkin, carrots, and chopped cooked
egg.
For herself, she made a pot of chicken stew and some baked spaghetti.
By the time she finished, the apartment smelled incredible.
Her cheek was still swollen, so Elise put on a fresh mask before ringing the doorbell of Apartment 601.

Chapter 56
The moment Harold opened the door, he caught the smell of dinner.
“What did you make?”
“Chicken stew.”
Harold glanced toward her apartment.
“That’s it?”
Elise looked at him.
“I made baked spaghetti too.”
Harold gave a vague “Mm” and stepped aside.
Blitz, meanwhile, had already buried his face in his bowl.
He ate with so much enthusiasm that Elise half expected him to start chewing on the bowl itself.
Watching him eat made Elise realize how hungry she was.
She wanted to head home and have dinner herself.
Harold usually ate before coming home, so she made what she assumed was nothing more than a polite offer.

I made plenty of stew…”
“I haven’t.”
Elise paused.
Harold continued calmly, “Then I’ll have some. Thanks.”
Elise stared at him.
He actually said yes?
She had only been being polite.
Noticing that she still hadn’t moved, Harold asked, “Is that a problem?”
Elise could never bring herself to turn someone down that directly.
She forced a smile.
“Not at all.”
She had only made enough stew for herself with maybe one extra serving.
Worried it wouldn’t be enough for both of them, Elise went back intg the kitchen and quickly pan-seared some extra påk, adding

During dinner, Harold noticed the finger marks still visible on
Elise’s face.
He didn’t ask about them.
He didn’t even look at them twice.
He simply acted as though he hadn’t seen anything.
After dinner, Harold insisted on doing the dishes.
He had clearly never done anything like it before. Before he was finished, he broke one of Elise’s plates.
Harold immediately offered to replace the entire set.
Elise told him it wasn’t necessary.
After Harold left, Elise opened Crossing Fate again.
She chose the female lead as usual and took notes on the story as she played.
A little while later, the doorbell rang.
Elise set her phone down on the couch and checked the video doorbell.
Hagold was standing outside, dressed in a suit.

She opened the door.
“Catch.”
He tossed something toward her.
Elise reacted quickly and caught it with both hands.
It was a small bottle of medicine for bruising and swelling.
She looked up at him.
“Mr. Nash, what’s this for?”
Harold answered as if it were obvious.
“If everyone ignored their injuries like you do, drug companies would go broke.”
Before Elise could respond, he turned around and went back to his apartment.
