Chapter 6
She was crying so hard she could barely make a sound.
He had seen Joan bullied and humiliated before, and she had never shed a single tear. But this time, she cried as if she had nowhere left to go.
“You know what, Landon? My goal was to get into A University, and I did it. I wanted an IELTS score of eight. I wanted to earn a lot of money. I wanted to take my mom and my brother traveling around the world. I wanted to buy a big house in Los Angeles… I was about to start my internship and work for real. So why did I meet you? Why did you come into my life? I will never see you again.”
Joan hung up.
When Landon called back, the line was already
unreachable.
She had blocked him. ·
His heart felt instantly hollowed out.
Heimmediately canceled his meeting and drove like a 6:58
runaway boast toward Joan’s university.

“Just because we’re ordinary people, does that mean we deserve to be bullied? Mr. Carter, your fiancée looks like a goddess in public, but behind the scenes she’s vicious. She even went to your mother and had her come to the school, where she slapped Joan in front of everyone… Joan has such a strong sense of dignity. How is she supposed to take that? If anything happens to her, your fiancée is a murderer.”
For a brief moment, Landon was at a loss.
Ironically, he did not believe Elise would make such a public scene. Even less that she would involve his mother.
But after asking the household staff, he learned the truth.
Elise had indeed gone to his home that afternoon and spoken with his father for nearly half an hour.
Then she left with his mother in the same car.
The truth was obvious. Elise had complained to his parents. He had misjudged her.
Landon’s face darkened with anger as he called Elise.

Landon turned the steering wheel with one hand and
made a sharp U-turn.
“Wait for me at the coffee shop.”
He arrived quickly.
Before the second cup of Blue Mountain coffee was even served, he was already standing in front of Elise.
His eyes were cold as ice as he stared at her.
“How old are you? Running to my parents to complain? Do you think making Joan unable to live makes you happy?”
Elise looked at him numbly, as if something deep in her chest had already split open.
“I only told your parents what I saw with my own eyes. And Joan’s slap was not done by me.”
After Sharon had said, “Elise, this is your fate,” something inside her had started to rebel.
She wanted, for once, to take control of her own life. 377

She told him honestly that she and Landon no longer had feelings for each other and asked the Carter family to cancel the engagement.
Victor gave her a few lectures about how marriage was not only about feelings, then said in a deep tone,
“Elise, no matter what happens, I will make the decision for you. Just marry Landon with peace of mind.”
It sounded reassuring, but he still did not care about her feelings.
Landon’s mother, Ruth Carter, was strong and
domineering. She dragged Elise into the car and took her
to Joan.
Elise only said she wanted to cancel the engagement.
Ruth snapped back,
“You didn’t say anything before, but now that the wedding is near you want to cancel it?”
Elise quietly replied,

“Landon cheated. He didn’t pick a date for that.”

Ruth did not like her, but she disliked even more the so called “true love” mistress who justified herself.
She raised her hand and slapped Joan.
It did not happen at A University campus, but in a restaurant nearby.
It was afternoon, and there were only a pair of lingering lovers in the hall who had not yet wanted to leave.
It seemed there was another person in the corner.
Harold?
Why was he there? She did not know.
She only remembered him leaning back in his chair, lazily taking a drag from his cigarette, flicking ash, and glancing casually in their direction.
“Elise! Don’t think staying silent means nothing happened.”
“Wasn’t it you who brought my mother to A University? Your intentions are worse than hitting her yourself.” 16:59
