Chapter 73
After a quick breakfast at home, Elise went to work.
At Firefly Glow, Elise handled some Novatech Global work remotely. Emily stepped out of the conference room and came
over with some news.
“Division Six got a new hire. She’s only been at Firefly for a little over two weeks, and she’s already putting together proposals on her own. The director loved one of them and is even thinking about bringing her on full-time.”
Elise smiled at her. “She earned it.”
Emily sighed. “Why can’t I be that talented?”
She returned to her desk, and Elise turned back to her screen and continued working.
A phone rang beside her.
When she saw Ethan’s name on the screen, she told the Novatech Global team she was ending the remote session.
Then she stepped somewhere quieter and answered.
“Are you really going to keep shutting Landon out?” Ethan asked. “Because if you do, someone else might actually win him?

someone else take him away?”
“Landon’s just immature. Whenever something new catches his attention, he gets carried away for a while. You know that better than anyone. Just be patient. Once the excitement wears off, he’ll come back to you.”
Ethan kept talking until his throat went dry.
Only then did he realize Elise hadn’t said a single word.
They had grown up together. Ethan had seen every important moment between them over the past fourteen years.
He genuinely didn’t want their relationship to end with regrets.
Elise knew Ethan meant well, but his words still made her
uncomfortable.
Because she was the mature one, she was expected to endure
more.
She was supposed to wait until Landon got tired of Joan and came back.
That was something the old Elise-the one before Landon betrayed her—might have done.
Buy Landon had changed. And so had Elise.

“Ethan, thank you. I still have work to finish, so I’ll let you go.”
Her expression remained calm as she returned to her desk.
Her fingers moved quickly across the keyboard again.

After work, Elise took a cab home and had planned to invite Chloe over for dinner.
But Chloe sounded upset when she called.
“Elise, I checked the accounts today and found out my dad’s been lying to me. He kept saying the company wasn’t doing well, so he only gave me a few thousand dollars a month to spend. But this whole time, he’s been secretly putting money into overseas accounts for my brother.”
Elise was stunned.
“How could he do that?”
Chloe’s father had always called her his precious girl, his little princess.
Whenever Chloe bought him something, he would proudly show it off to everyone.

over to Chloe.
“What does your mom think?” Elise asked carefully.
Chloe sniffled.
“She’s furious. She said she’ll make sure I get what I deserve.”
Elise had a strange feeling that something was off.
Chloe’s mother didn’t work at the company, but she visited often. How had she never noticed something like that?
Elise didn’t know what had really happened, and she didn’t want to jump to conclusions.
After hanging up, she let out a quiet sigh and looked out the taxi window.
Why was it so hard just to live a peaceful life?
When Elise got home, the apartment was quiet and dark.
She stepped inside and turned on the lights.
She was about to sit down on the couch when a loud bark
suddenly came from outside.
The emptiness in Elise’s eyes disappeared instantly.

She jumped up and hurried to the balcony.
Across from her, Blitz stood with his front paws on the railing, his tongue hanging out as he stared at her excitedly.
The moment he saw her, he dropped down and spun around
twice.
Then he put his paws back on the railing and whined softly like an excited puppy.
“Blitz!”
Elise’s voice was filled with unmistakable joy.
A bright smile spread across her face.
“You’re back again. That’s wonderful.”
She reached out, wanting to pat Blitz’s head despite the distance
between their balconies.
“Are your legs completely healed? Spin around again and let mè
see.”
As if he understood exactly what she wanted, Blitz did as he was
told.
He lowered his front paws, spun around twice as if ch sing his17

Footsteps sounded from the living room.
