The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 104

My confident and open response made Director Bennett pause for a moment. Then he pressed on, "Yesterday, a photo of you and Dr. Cross from the Anesthesiology Department surfaced in the Capital General group chat. How do you explain that?"

"Since it was an exchange event, it was only right to show our hospital's friendliness and goodwill. As for the photo of him holding my arm, the deck was swaying, and he simply steadied me out of basic gentlemanly courtesy."

My gaze must have been remarkably steady, because the director's expression wasn't nearly as severe as when I had first walked in.

After a brief silence, he instructed, "Head back and focus on your work. We will investigate this matter thoroughly."

That was exactly what I wanted.

I just wondered which miserable soul I had accidentally offended to warrant an anonymous letter sent straight to HR.

I figured I would just wait patiently for the results.

But to my surprise, the moment I walked out of the HR office, I bumped straight into Zoey.

The young woman clearly hadn't expected to see me there. A flicker of panic crossed her face before she gave me a stiff nod and nervously pushed open the HR door.

News of my summons to HR spread through my department quickly. Seeing my calm demeanor, Amber anxiously suggested, "If worse comes to worst, we can go beg Dr. Evelyn Yates. She's a senior leader here; putting in a good word for you wouldn't be hard."

"Hold on," the head nurse interjected with a different perspective. "Since the hospital is investigating, let them investigate. We'll see who's pulling the strings behind the scenes when the truth comes out."

Watching the two of them bicker over my fate, my anxious heart finally settled a little.

I waited all the way until the end of my shift.

Just as I was packing my things to leave, a loud voice boomed in my ear, "Is Dr. Hayes in? Selena, are you in here?"

I knew that obnoxious voice. Who else could it be but Zelda from Neurosurgery?
