The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 11

Ferris had called Lucille half an hour ago.

He claimed he was at the hospital and tied up with an emergency, so he had a custom designer interview suit delivered to my mother—one of the few people who actually knew about our marriage.

Once again, Ferris was playing the role of the doting husband flawlessly.

Logically, it made sense.

But deep down, I knew our relationship was nowhere near the level of exchanging thoughtful gifts.

"There's a limit to how much you can let your husband spoil you," Lucille lectured, her tone as rigid as ever. "When you go back, apologize to him. If the Sterling family asks, just say you wanted to experience the workforce for a bit, but promise you'll focus on getting pregnant and giving them a baby boy, understand?"

My mother wanted me to pledge my domestic devotion to the Sterlings.

Her outdated tactics might have worked on an ordinary man, but with Ferris, they would only backfire.

Watching the minutes tick by, I cut to the chase. "If we're playing the perfect, obedient wife, we might as well go all the way."

Wouldn't a tearful farewell to my career after actually landing the job be far more convincing than just backing out of the interview?

Especially when the position was at Capital General Hospital, the holy grail for every medical student.

Getting hired would indirectly prove that the Sterlings had great taste and chose a highly capable daughter-in-law.

Seeing a flicker of hesitation on Lucille's face, I added more fuel to the fire. "If I prove my worth, it makes you look good, too. Or do you want to spend the rest of your life bowing your head to Vivian?"

At that, a sharp gleam returned to Lucille's eyes, and she finally stepped aside.

Despite rushing like a madwoman, I was still late.

Zoey had gone in before me. Judging by her bright expression as she walked out, she had nailed it.

What I hadn't expected, however, was to see Ferris sitting among the four interviewers.
