The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 128

I knew the head nurse meant well, but that "tread carefully" still felt like a dagger to the heart.

Look at that. Ferris treated Zoey so well—well enough that his other intern, Curtis, felt so slighted he was willing to destroy his own career just to hurt her; well enough that Zelda looked at her with pure envy; well enough that even a seasoned veteran like the head nurse had to warn me to tread carefully. So what did that make me, Selena Hayes?

Eight years. I had trailed behind Ferris for eight whole years. And now, I was only receiving his indirect help because I was catching the overflow of his affection for Zoey.

Mrs. Sterling?

How laughable.

I wasn't Mrs. Sterling; I was just a joke.

After working overtime until 7 PM, I headed downstairs, exhausted. To my surprise, I bumped into Ferris and Zoey right by the elevators.

Ferris still wore his usual unapproachable expression, but Zoey, standing right beside him, looked incredibly happy. She had a bright smile on her face, and her eyes sparkled with a mix of girlish shyness and absolute adoration as she chattered away about some trendy new restaurant.

One cold, one warm; one handsome, one beautiful. They looked incredibly harmonious together.

So harmonious that I suddenly felt entirely out of place standing there.

My lingering gaze met Ferris's eyes in the air. The man paused, a flash of impatience crossing his features.

Zoey, sharp as ever, noticed this. Following his gaze, she froze for a second before awkwardly greeting me, "What a coincidence, Selena... Did you just finish work too?"

It was obvious how forced her greeting was.

But since we had already run into each other, there was no point in actively avoiding them, so the three of us stepped into the elevator together.

Trying to minimize my presence, I tactfully stood behind them on the right side and pulled out my phone as a prop.
