Ferris's expression instantly darkened at my question.
His deep, unfathomable eyes locked onto my face, swirling with an intense, unreadable emotion.
I held my ground, refusing to back down.
After a tense standoff, he frowned and mocked, "Why exactly do you think I did it, Selena?"
He had completely caught my underlying accusation.
The words lodged in my throat. Before I could speak, Ferris fired back. "Don't tell me you think a qualified doctor only needs to play with cold equipment in a lab all day?"
"What are you trying to say?"
Ferris pulled out his car keys. "If a doctor can't even manage her own personal relationships, how can she be responsible for a patient's health?"
He was mocking my inability to handle Lucille, implying it was my own fault I was late.
His words were harsh, but I couldn't argue.
He had indirectly confirmed my suspicions.
As for the suit, it really was exactly as he said—a basic courtesy for "Mrs. Sterling," done simply out of convenience.
It was just a prop to keep the family elders off our backs.
The real effort, the handwritten notes, were exclusively for Zoey.
The sound of the car door unlocking snapped me back to reality. Seeing him about to get in, a sudden surge of reckless courage made me speak up. "You certainly put a lot more effort into Zoey."
He paused, looking at me with narrowing eyes. I didn't hide it. "I saw the handwritten notes."
"And?"
His single, sharp retort silenced me completely.
He was right. This was a contract marriage. What right or standing did I have to confront him?
Besides, this absurd farce of a relationship was nearing its end anyway.
My throat felt glued shut. In an instant, all the fight drained out of me, leaving me utterly deflated.
The heavy door slammed shut as Ferris got into the driver's seat. Through the windshield, our eyes met for a fleeting second.
Half of his face was illuminated by the garage lights, the other half swallowed by shadows.
