The next morning, I arrived at the department with dark circles under my eyes. The head nurse immediately hurried over, her face full of concern. "Did you not get enough sleep? Did something happen?"
Thinking about the chaotic mess from last night, I felt a wave of helpless bitterness.
The head nurse was sharp, pausing for a couple of seconds before asking, "Did you have a falling out with the new girl while apartment hunting yesterday?"
I shook my head, my mind flashing to Ferris buying the apartment outright for Zoey. "She already sorted out her living situation," I said vaguely.
"All by herself?" The head nurse looked surprised and muttered, "Hawthorn Residences' rent isn't cheap by any means."
Rent. I chewed on the word, a bitter smile tugging at my lips.
She didn't need to pay rent. With Ferris backing her, she had practically been upgraded to a homeowner on the spot.
Seeing that I didn't respond, the head nurse shifted the topic. "What about you? Have you decided whether you're going to get roommates or stay in the dorms?"
Thinking about Ferris's cold attitude the night before, and recalling Lucille's hysterical demands, I sighed helplessly. "I'm sorry, ma'am. My family won't allow it, so I'll probably have to stay at home for now."
The head nurse nodded understandingly. "That makes sense. It really isn't safe for a young woman to live alone these days."
Her well-meaning words only made me feel worse. Before I could dwell on it, she changed the subject again. "Oh, by the way, Selena, have you heard? The department might be going to Mount Azure tomorrow for a ski retreat."
I shook my head in confusion. "The entire Department of Anesthesiology?"
The head nurse immediately lowered her voice. "Not just us this time. I heard we're going with the Department of Neurosurgery. Apparently, it's an order from upper management."
Hearing that it was arranged by the hospital administration, everything suddenly clicked. The anonymous report incident had caused an uproar throughout Capital General, and everyone assumed there was bad blood between Anesthesiology and Neurosurgery. Creating a joint retreat was clearly management's way of quashing the rumors and forcing the two departments to bond.
