The four of us stood close together. The young woman kept her eyes cast downward and apologized profusely, "I'm so sorry, Dr. Lennox. I'm sorry, Selena. I just got my driver's license not too long ago, I didn't mean to scare you."
Leon let out a deep sigh, glancing at Zoey before turning a stern look to Ferris. "Ferris, are you insane? You know how treacherous the roads to Mount Azure are, yet you let a complete novice drive?"
Zoey's head dropped even lower.
Ferris merely glanced at the narrow gap between the two cars and said coolly, "She handled the brakes just fine."
After delivering his verdict, he looked down at Zoey. There wasn't a trace of reprimand in his eyes; instead, they were overflowing with indulgence.
Their gazes were practically glued to each other in a sickening display of affection.
Thinking of my husband who hadn't come home all night, and recalling the brand-new apartment he had bought for Zoey, everything suddenly clicked into place.
As a suffocating wave of despair washed over me, I heard the young woman's sickeningly sweet voice again. "Dr. Lennox is right to scold me, I'll definitely keep it in mind. I'm just glad you and Selena are okay, otherwise, I would never forgive myself."
I wasn't sure if it was my imagination, but it felt like Zoey deliberately emphasized the words 'you and Selena'.
Since she had already played the victim card so perfectly, Leon couldn't exactly keep pressing the issue. "Forget it, just go park the car. The others are probably already here."
At Leon's cue, I naturally turned around to get back into his car. But just as my hand brushed the door handle, Zoey's coy voice drifted over.
"Wow, Dr. Lennox is amazing. Even though Selena turned you down in the group chat, you still managed to bring her here safely."
Followed immediately by Ferris's cold scoff.
