The phrase 'care package' left both Leon and me completely speechless.
He glanced at me, then back at Zoey, rushing to clarify. "Dr. Hayes and I are just friends."
He emphasized the word 'friends' heavily, throwing a desperately innocent look in Ferris's direction.
Meanwhile, Ferris was methodically peeling a shrimp for Zoey, looking utterly unbothered by the gossip swirling around us. He was the picture of cool indifference.
Of course he was. The only person he actually cared about was sitting right beside him. Whatever rumors surrounded his secret, on-paper wife meant absolutely nothing to him.
If anything, it just made it easier for him to maintain his single bachelor persona.
Thinking quickly, Leon shifted the focus to the massive plate of BBQ ribs in front of him. "Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and smells incredible. Now that is a culinary masterpiece!"
An image of him practically drooling when he took that lunchbox from me years ago flashed in my mind, and I couldn't help but smirk.
The man was a total foodie.
As I glanced up, I caught a razor-sharp glare from across the table. Ferris's eyes had turned completely glacial, a mocking sneer tugging at the corner of his mouth. But the second Zoey leaned toward him, his expression melted back into pure warmth.
Under the warm restaurant lights, he looked impossibly elegant, radiating an untouchable, aristocratic grace. His manners were flawless.
Was that split-second glare just my imagination?
After dinner, we all headed downstairs.
When the topic of getting the interns home came up, Ferris naturally claimed responsibility for Zoey. I immediately announced I was going to catch the last subway train.
Hazel immediately shut that down. "Absolutely not. It's way too late, and the trains are stopping soon. It's not safe for a young woman. Wait, Selena, which district do you live in again?"
I froze.
I couldn't exactly announce that I lived in the same sprawling, ultra-exclusive waterfront estate as Ferris Sterling.
"The tech district..." I lied smoothly, naming a generic apartment complex two streets away from our actual house.
As soon as the words left my mouth, Hazel clapped her hands in delight. "What are the odds! Leon lives right over there. Leon, why don't you just drive her?"
