The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 35

After collecting my emotions, I headed back to the mediation room.

Ferris was already gone, leaving only The Iron Mask and a few mediators behind.

"Thank god The Scalpel swooped in when he did," Dr. Logan said, looking like a man who had narrowly escaped a firing squad. A sly glint flashed in his eyes as he looked at me. "Make sure you thank him properly the next time you see him, Selena."

Thank him.

I chewed on those words, and recalling Zoey's conversation in the bathroom, I couldn't help but scoff inwardly.

Ferris had only intervened to protect Zoey's spotless record, while everyone else in the room was fully prepared to let me take the fall.

I wasn't going to thank anyone.

"Well, Selena really took one for the team today," Dr. Logan continued, his attitude noticeably softer. "I know you feel wronged, but this is a rite of passage for every anesthesiologist. Just treat it as a learning experience."

He sounded so earnest, as if he genuinely had my best interests at heart.

Had I just been overthinking things?

"The poor girl must be in shock," one of the mediators chimed in. "It's almost quitting time anyway. Why don't you let her head home early to rest?"

Dr. Logan glanced at me and nodded. "Alright, you can head out."

The entire fiasco was finally put to rest.

But having a cup of tea hurled at my face had left me deeply shaken. I didn't even notice the elevator reaching the basement parking garage.

Coincidentally, as I looked up, I spotted Leon Lennox stepping out of the adjacent elevator.

Our eyes met. The slightly boyish-faced man paused for a second before walking briskly toward me.

Dressed in a brown corduroy jacket and a cream-colored cashmere sweater, Leon looked casually stylish without his white coat.

"What a coincidence, Dr. Hayes," he said, his warm, gentle gaze sweeping over me for a brief second before he asked, "Heading home?"

I nodded gloomily.

After all, overtime was a doctor's standard routine. Getting off work early was just my consolation prize for being the department's designated scapegoat.
