The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 47

Lucille's question was entirely impolite, and her gaze boldly sized Leon up from head to toe.

I hurriedly explained, "I'm so sorry, Dr. Lennox. This is my mother."

Leon raised an eyebrow, clearly a bit surprised, but he quickly extended a courteous hand. "Hello, Mrs. Hayes. I'm Selena's colleague, Leon Lennox. You can just call me Leon."

He was perfectly poised, completely unbothered by Lucille's brash behavior.

Lucille knew when to quit while she was ahead. She beamed. "Oh, no need to be so formal! Just call me sister."

My eyes widened in shock, but Leon effortlessly played along. "Sure thing. I'll make sure to call you sister next time we meet."

Lucille was positively thrilled, giggling wildly, while I wanted nothing more than to find a hole to crawl into and die. Perhaps sensing that we needed a private moment, Leon added, "I still have some work back at the department. I'll let you two—I mean, let you sisters catch up."

Lucille waved him off. "Go on, go on! A young man's work is important."

As soon as Leon's figure disappeared down the hall, Lucille dropped the smile. She glared at me. "What's the background on this Leon? How old is he? Is he a Port Capital local? Don't tell me... among Port Capital's top four families, there actually is a Lennox family..."

I immediately shut her down. "Mom, can you please drop the habit of appraising the net worth of every single man you meet? We are just friends."

"Friends need to know these things too!" Lucille rolled her eyes before backtracking. "But looking across all of Capital General, there aren't many who can match Ferris's wealth anyway. Never mind, forget him."

I pinched the bridge of my nose, getting straight to the point. "Don't you usually hate the smell of disinfectant? Why did you come all the way here?"

"At this afternoon's floral arrangement salon, Vivian deliberately sat me at the very end of the table! When I confronted her, she actually told me I should be grateful to even have a seat. She even said that in a few days, I might not even be allowed into the parties anymore." Lucille sneered, then shot me a venomous glare. "All thanks to you."

I guessed Vivian had already told my mother about the divorce agreement to put her in her place.

When I didn't say anything, Lucille grew anxious, her voice rising two octaves. "So it's true? The divorce agreement?"

I didn't plan on hiding it. Watching her face turn from white to red to a sickly green, I added, "But Ferris tore it up."

Lucille clutched her chest in relief, suddenly triumphant. "See, what did I tell you? Ferris loves you. How could he bear to divorce you? But let me warn you, Selena—given our family's situation, you need to know your limits when you throw a tantrum. Playing hard to get is fun for a man occasionally, but do it too much and it'll backfire."

I had zero interest in her wife-taming philosophies. Those tactics only applied to actual marriages. Ferris and I were merely putting on an act.

I didn't have the right to throw any kind of tantrum, big or small.

Not to mention, Ferris already had a sweet, innocent girl right by his side.

Naturally, I didn't dare bring up Zoey. With my mother's explosive temper, the moment she caught wind of it, she would undoubtedly cause a massive scene.
