The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 6

I slipped quietly out of the conference room while everyone else was distracted by the spectacle.

But after taking only two steps, I ran right into Leon Lennox.

He spotted me and offered a warm greeting. "Ms. Hayes, didn't you see Dr. Sterling?"

Leon was Ferris's colleague. They were around the same age, but Leon had joined the Department of Neurosurgery a year after Ferris, so he was currently still a resident.

The only reason we knew each other was because I had bumped into him a few times when I was dropping off fresh clothes and homemade soup for Ferris.

Later on, whenever Ferris claimed to be busy, he just had me hand the items off to Leon. Over time, we became familiar with each other.

Thinking about it now, Ferris's "busyness" was probably just an excuse to avoid seeing my face.

But Leon didn't seem surprised to see me at Capital General for the exam.

"Oh, he mentioned it briefly during rounds earlier. Said he was going to come down and take a look," Leon added when I didn't reply. "I guess you guys missed each other?"

He used an explicitly disappointed tone for that last part.

As if my failure to run into Ferris was some grand tragedy.

But he had it all wrong. Ferris had indeed come down, but he was strictly here to see Zoey.

Perhaps sensing my shift in mood, Leon quickly changed the subject. "How was the written exam? Was it difficult?"

I was just about to answer when gossip erupted from the hallway behind me.

"These young girls today are really something. They use a pretty face to pull strings. Ugh, we studied for so long, and now it's all going down the drain."

"Tell me about it. When you latch onto a neurosurgery expert, you've basically already got one foot inside Capital General!"
