The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 78

Zoey froze, her doe eyes immediately darting toward Ferris. A second later, the man's icy voice reached my ears: "Suit yourself."

Two short, clipped words. Without another glance, he turned and walked away.

His tone was entirely unapologetic.

As if I were the one being completely ungrateful.

A bitter taste flooded my mouth. I heard Zoey quickly add, "Then we'll see you at the hotel, Selena!"

Watching their retreating figures, it felt like a massive boulder was pressing down on my chest.

What was he playing at? Given the toxic, tangled mess between the three of us, did Ferris honestly think we could just share a car ride like nothing was wrong?

Did he invite me just to show off his generous, upstanding character, or did he actively want me a front-row seat to watch them play the happy couple?

Sorry, but I wasn't going to endure that.

Frustrated, I grabbed the handle of my suitcase and marched toward a different exit.

But the second I stepped outside the terminal, I instantly regretted my stubbornness. A vicious blast of freezing wind, thick with sleet, hit me straight in the face, sending violent shivers down my spine.

The rideshare pickup area was a chaotic nightmare. People were crammed together, yelling over each other, desperately trying to flag down cars in the freezing sludge.

I nervously pulled my freezing hands from my pockets. Just as I dialed the driver's number, a rushed pedestrian violently bumped into my suitcase, sending it skidding toward the edge of the curb.

I lunged after it, but I wasn't fast enough. The suitcase tumbled off the curb and crashed onto the pavement with a loud, sickening crack.

With a heavy sigh, I hauled the bag upright, only to realize one of the wheels had completely snapped off.

Bad weather was one thing, but this was just plain bad luck.

I stared blankly at my crippled suitcase, letting out a long, defeated sigh.

On the phone, my driver barked that the pickup zone was too gridlocked and demanded I walk further down the exit road to meet him.

Figuring it was easier to just comply than argue, I began dragging my busted suitcase through the sleet. I didn't even know how far I had walked. The driver wasn't answering my calls anymore, and just as my hands were going completely numb from the cold, a notification popped up: the driver had canceled my ride.

When I tried calling again, the line was dead.
