I quietly looked away. Spotting Dr. Evelyn Yates and Professor Rhodes sitting together, I silently moved toward the back row. A second later, Zoey called out, "Selena, there's an empty seat over here."
I followed her gaze and immediately saw the empty seat next to Caspian Cross.
I felt it was inappropriate and continued moving to the back, but then I heard Zoey ask in a polite tone, "Dr. Cross, is anyone sitting next to you?"
Caspian, who had been reading a newspaper, looked up slightly. His sharp gaze swept across my face as he said politely, "It's empty. Please have a seat, Dr. Hayes."
His invitation completely trapped me.
If I stubbornly went to the back now, I would seem ungrateful. As Ferris had said, we were here representing Capital General. I couldn't do anything that might affect our unity or give people cause for gossip.
Besides, Ferris was sitting next to Zoey himself. He couldn't possibly find fault with me over this.
With that in mind, I offered a polite, mechanical smile. "Thank you, Dr. Cross."
Once everyone was on board, the bus slowly started moving. I pulled out the notes I hadn't finished organizing from yesterday's meeting and resumed my work.
But moments later, a commotion from the front left caught my attention. Zoey was covering her mouth and taking shallow breaths by the window, occasionally letting out suppressed whimpers. Her petite face was deathly pale.
If my guess was right, she was getting carsick.
Just then, Ferris, who was sitting next to her, suddenly produced a convenience store bag like magic and handed it to her.
Zoey looked down, her eyes widening in delight. "Ferris, you actually remembered that I like eating these when I get carsick?"
Ferris maintained a calm expression. "You mentioned it last night."
She looked incredibly sweet. "You're so thoughtful. I'm so touched. Thank you."
She took a piece of candy from the bag, carefully unwrapped it right in front of him, and popped it into her mouth with the joy and satisfaction of a child. "It's so sweet," she sighed.
It looked exactly like a scene from a romance movie where a husband doted on his wife.
Only, the wife Ferris was doting on wasn't me.
She was enjoying her sweet treat, but sitting nearby, I immediately caught an awful scent.
The candy was durian-flavored.
For those who liked it, the smell was a delight, but it was absolute torture for me.
