Anthony

When he opened his eyes and looked about, he was still in the backseat of his car, and the Whispering Moon Gates could be seen out the back window. All they’d done was drive him off pack territory and leave him there.

He’d been abandoned outside the pack, uncaring that he could die from not only that rejection but the loss of his wolf as well. Not even Paul, his own former Gamma, had cared about what would or could happen to him.

He got out of the car and saw two gate guards stand to attention as he looked at the pack Although he knew how to fight, he’d now be no match for any wolf. Even an omega would likely bring him down if they were well-trained.

He turned away from them and got in behind the wheel, there was nothing else he could do, but return home to his pack, a pack that was going to see Mischa’s rejection of him had seen his Alpha Wolf leave him. He wondered if they would even be surprised or care at this point, they’d stayed loyal to Mischa all this time.

He drove away, it was late in the afternoon was all he knew, and his chest still hurt from the rejection, and he had no idea how long that was going to last. Some rejections lingered for weeks or months. Their Kind related that to how much regret one had, and he had a lot right now; it was likely going to stay with him for a very long time.

Anthony didn’t know how he made it back to his pack, in his half-numbed, half pain-filled state, but he had somehow managed to get there; on autopilot, he supposed. All wolves knew their way home.

The gate opened for his car when the pack came into sight, and he didn’t stop to greet the guard, just drove through and pulled up to the packhouse. He could see the three Alpha Elders all there waiting for him, having been told by the gate guard, or they’d been feeling for him to arrive back into pack territory.

They all looked right at him in the light of dawn as the sun crested the eastern horizon, and he saw them all realize he was wolf-less. He saw Harvey nod slowly and then state words he didn’t want nor need to hear, “Got what you deserved, I see.”

He stopped walking. If he still had Shade, he’d unleash him on that Alpha, his own kin who was so very disrespectful of the Alpha to the pack. “That’s uncalled-for.” He stated, he really wanted to yell at them all. But he didn’t actually have it in him to do it. He was tired and wanted to just crawl into his bed and get some sleep if it would come.

So, he walked past them, only to hear Harvey ask, “Did you accept it, or were you made to?”

“What does it matter?” Anthony replied. “I’m tired. Leave me alone.”

“You have to explain yourself to us,” Harvey stated.

“Actually, as the Alpha, no I do not.” He bit out and stopped walking, turned to look at them. He was still the Alpha to this pack until one of them overthrew him, he supposed, and he had a feeling it was coming if he couldn’t clean up his act. But he needed sleep and a few days, maybe a few weeks, to pull himself together.

“I’ll call Nicholas then, shall I?” Harvey commented.

“Go ahead, you do that,” Anthony muttered. “You’ve likely been in contact with him all this time anyway.” He bit out, Nicholas had way too much information, and maybe he’d lied about where it came from. They weren’t allies anymore, and so he didn’t have to tell him the truth. He’d stopped doing that the moment Christy had insulted Lucinda and severed the alliance.

“We have.” He was told simply, they no longer cared to hide it from him, “Mischa? Report what happened in full.”

He stood staring at them more than angry now. “It’s blatantly obvious, is it not!” He waved a hand at his neck. “One filigree remains.”

“Did you accept it or were you forced to accept it and by whom?” Allen asked.

Anthony’s jaw tightened. “I don’t have to explain myself to any of you.”

“We as the Elders of this pack beg to differ,” Ray stated. “You are accountable to us, and if

you

don’t tell us in full, we’ll pull it from you forcibly.”

“What right do you have to do that to me? It’s over between Mischa and I, isn’t that enough? I didn’t drag her home. Couldn’t do anything once there.” He muttered “Nicholas was there.”

“So, you accepted it?” Harvey pushed once more.

Anthony stood staring at them. He wasn’t about to humiliate himself, and tell them Laud had forced it from him herself, after Shade had abandoned him. “Don’t you have an ounce of compassion in you. I just lost my Mate and Luna, and you’re here demanding I recount it to

you.

“Do you understand I lost my wolf over it? That’s how painful it was. I don’t want to fucking relive it,” he grated out.

“That was always coming for you,” Allen shrugged, as if it was of no consequence. “Shade made that vow, and yet you still couldn’t pull yourself into line, and become true and loyal to

your first Mate and Luna. Let her down time and time again, a year she stayed at our request.

“To give you a proper chance to change, redeem yourself and right your wrongs, see the error of your ways and come to understand that losing her would be your downfall.” Allen shook

his head.

“A year of nothing but failure and selfishness is all you showed. We’ve all read Mischa’s diaries, and before you did,” Ray stated.

“I am curious, Anthony, about what happened when Christy fell in the canyon, and your reaction to Mischa being in the hospital. She had her own thoughts on the matter,” Ray stated. “Were they correct?”

He looked from one to the other, each in turn, and if he had Shade, he’d be tearing into them right now, because again they were on Mischa’s side. None of this mattered anymore. It was in the past, and she was gone. That was all that should be focused on not rehashing things he couldn’t fix.

Anthony balled his fist and turned away from them to go inside, “What the hell does it matter

now?” he bit out.

“Because if you even for a moment thought it was her doing, or that she had a hand in it. That is what broke Shades vow in full. A single momentary thought of ‘it was Mischa’s fault’ saw you betray her once more over something Christy likely did to herself, and why? Just to have you not seen with Mischa in public as always,” Allen told him.

“We’re about to go and pull that very thing from Christy herself. Do you want to come and see what kind of traitor you allowed to stay inside this pack? She not only stayed a traitor after punishment, but continuously did traitorous things against Mischa and you allowed it.”

He knew, he had thought she’d had a hand in it, and so, yes, he’d broken that vow his own wolf had made. Now he’d suffered the consequences of it and there was no going back. “Do whatever you want. She’s unworthy of me anyway.” He bit out and walked off inside.

“I think you and Christy are both the same. Deserve each other,” Harvey yelled after him.

Anthony stalked away, up the stairs and banged into his suite, and then just leaned on the door after it was closed. He looked around the room and there was nothing in here of either of his Mates, and hadn’t been for a long time now.

He scrubbed a hand over his face, and then just slid down the door and stared aimlessly across the room. It wasn’t going to be his suite much longer, from the way the Elders were talking out there, what had been said to him before he left about how they’d wanted to give Mischa the pack. To him, knowing that Alpha Dennis of the Wolfen Council was coming in just three days, it was likely they’d already decided to unseat him.
