Chapter 445
Ellie’s POV
The days after blurred together into one long stretch of gray, bleak heartbreak.
I kept the clinic open because I had to, of course, but my work suffered. I could hardly sleep at night, and it showed during the days, when I was supposed to be on my top game to take care of patients.
The thing was, no matter how much I tried to focus, I just… couldn’t. Not when those threads were fraying in my chest, still half-severed, like Dominic wanted to draw this out as long as possible, perhaps as some kind of revenge for the painful way I had divorced him.
After our last discussion before he left Goldenveil, I didn’t want to see him that way.
But it was hard not to. Especially when my mind was running on fumes and every time I shut my eyes, I found myself making up scenarios that probably weren’t happening at all. But they felt real. And that was what mattered the most.
By the third day, my melancholy had not gone unnoticed-not just by my patients, who were probably trying to be less annoyed than they actually were when I almost wrote them prescriptions for the wrong medications and started bandaging the wrong spots, but especially by my friends, who had started to notice even the slightest shifts in my mood without really meaning to.
By the fourth day, which was my day off, I couldn’t seem to make myself get out of bed until almost noon, and even then it was only because someone was pounding on my apartment door hard enough to rattle the wood.
It was Amelia. Nico was right behind her, carrying a bag slung over one shoulder.
“You look like death,” Amelia said, pushing past me into the apartment before I could stop her. “And I mean that as your friend.”
“Gee, um… Thanks.”
She stopped, turning slowly to look around at the small apartment. Admittedly, I hadn’t been keeping up with cleaning. The sink was full of dishes, the bed was unmade, and I’d tracked mud in from the street at some point and hadn’t bothered cleaning it up.
“What happened?” she asked, looking at me while Nico remained in the doorway, watching with lifted brows.
