“I never expected any of this.”

“But we always loved each other,” she went on. “Even when you were stuck with my awful sister, who broke your heart in the end, you and I always had a connection-you can’t deny that. It’s not entirely my fault we found our way back to each other, just as we always should have.”

“You still played me,” I growled.

“Like I said.” She was struggling a little now under my grip. “I did what I had to do to get close to you without being murdered. But in the end, I was only responsible for half of it. Our wolves went into heat last night. You came to me-and the rest is history.”

As she spoke, her eyes flicked to my neck, to the fresh mark still throbbing against the skin, clearly satisfied with herself.

Every instinct told me to say the words right then. One sentence, four words. That was all it would take to end it. Then, I would arrest her and make sure she didn’t see the outside of a cell for the rest of her miserable life for what she had done to Ellie. For what she had done to all of us.

But as my lips parted to say the words, my wolf bracing himself for the inevitable pain of the fresh bond severing, my eyes flicked down to her neck and I froze.

Bare. Unmarked. Not a scratch on her.

If this had gone the way she clearly wanted it to, then we would both be carrying matching bites, hers on my neck and mine on hers, a bond sealed in both directions. Instead there was only one mark in this room, and it

was mine.

The relief that washed over me was so immediate and intense that I nearly let go of her then and there.

The bond I shared with Ellie wasn’t severed. Not all the way, at least. That was why I didn’t feel worse-because the bond was still there, half of it. Vivian had marked me, but I hadn’t marked her, and thus my bond with Ellie still existed in the part of me that Vivian hadn’t been able to reach.

Which meant this could still be undone.

I swallowed the rejection before it left my mouth.

If I said those words to her now, there was a chance she could retaliate against Ellie, just as she had done in a past timeline. She was still the Beta’s daughter back in Goldenveil. Who knew who her allies were back there, while Ellie was alone, with no one to protect her besides a family she hardly knew?
