Dominic’s POV

The scent of myrrh and frankincense was thick enough to coat the back of my throat, cloying at the insides of my nostrils, making my head pound like something was trying to dig its way out from behind my eyes.

I forced my eyes to open.

The sheets under me weren’t mine. Neither was the mattress, too soft in the middle, or the smell of the room itself, or the ceiling, or any of it. I blinked, forcing my head to turn even as it made my skull pound worse.

A single red veil was sitting on the pillow next to me.

My stomach twisted.

Water was running somewhere close by. A shower, I realized, behind a door I didn’t recognize, in a room I had never seen before in my life.

I sat up slowly, one hand pressed to my temple, the room briefly tilting sideways before it settled down. My mouth tasted like copper and something bitter underneath it, and every muscle in my body felt like it had been

wrung out.

I didn’t remember much of anything. Whatever happened last night was a blur. I only knew two things: that veil. And the scattered pieces of a memory that made me feel utterly sick.

Lady Everheart.

I vaguely recalled the moments leading up to the darkness. Sitting at the bar. My head getting too fuzzy for one drink. The hallways bending and twisting interminably as I tried to make my way back to my room.

Then, slowly, more memories came, fractured and out of order. I recalled a woman in a veil climbing onto the bed. Her hands pinning me down. My fingers closing around the fabric, yanking, some part of me screaming that something was wrong, that I needed to see her face before-

Before…

I couldn’t get past that point. Everything after it was black. All I recalled was a prick of pain at the side of my neck. Nothing more.

I touched the spot on instinct.

It was still raw. Swollen. Tender enough that I hissed through my teeth when my fingers grazed it.

The water shut off.

I sat there, frozen, staring at the bathroom door while my wolf came awake somewhere behind my ribs.

The door opened. Steam rolled out first, then Vivian, wrapped in a towel with her hair dripping down her shoulders. She stopped in the doorway, smiling at me like nothing had happened at all. Like I hadn’t turned her into a rogue months ago. Like I hadn’t been hunting her down since Ellie told me everything.

“Good morning, sleepyhead,” she said with a pleasant smile.
