Chapter 442
Even if that weren’t the case, I had still chosen this.
So why did it feel like an enormous, all-consuming part of me was grieving over it?
I sank into the kitchen chair, the tea forgotten, and pressed my palms to my eyes. My wolf dropped her head and whimpered, retreating into the space where she lived in my chest to lick her wounds in peace.
In the silence that followed, as the pain slowly subsided and turned into a dull, aching background sensation- the process was over, although I could still feel a few threads there as if the bond hadn’t been fully broken, as if the new one had only been half-completed, but it had still happened, and that was what mattered-I cried.
I cried, and the tears were hot and bitter and silent tracking out of my tightly squeezed eyes and soaking my palms, slipping free until they slid between my fingers and dripped down onto my nightgown.
I’d wanted this. I had chosen this the day I chose to leave. I had felt so relieved when he signed those divorce papers, and back then, the thought of him moving on and finally severing our bond was something that I had hoped for.
I kept telling myself that, over and over. Like saying it enough might make it true.
And yet, despite all my best efforts, some stubborn, idiotic part of me had spent every night since the divorce half-convinced that if I gave it enough time, if I figured out how to find the version of Dominic I could trust again, then maybe, just maybe, we would find our way back to each other in the end.
The way I used to believe things worked out, back before I learned better. Twice over.
When I told him everything about my past life in that clinic, I’d thought for certain that it was going to happen.
I’d never said those thoughts and wishes outloud, of course. Not to Amelia, not to my father, not even to my own
reflection.
But they had been there the whole time, underneath everything else I told myself. No matter what happened, there was always a part of me that didn’t want to let go. Even when I thought Dominic was my killer in a past life, I still couldn’t fully let go of him.
