“Now then,” he said, clearing his throat, “about the expectations for tomorrow… Of course, my entourage will arrive first… I figure, since you’re mated to the Beta’s daughter…”

He went on to explain the logistics of tomorrow’s arrival. Which order we would arrive in, how we would introduce ourselves, the politics of my recent union with Vivian as if any of it had been my choice.

I hardly listened. When Monroe stood and walked over to the window, looking out, I let my eyes drift to the desk, quickly scanning the documents.

To my intrigue, I spotted what looked like three bank transfer confirmations. I just barely managed to spot the date the most recent one had gone through-yesterday-before Monroe “casually” smoothed another paper over them, hiding them from view.

“Well?” His face was cool when I looked up at him. I kept mine neutral. “Are we clear about tomorrow?”

“Crystal,” I said, standing. “I’ll be ready.”

He smiled. “Good. Dominic, I have to say, I think this union between yourself and Vivian was a very smart move. At this rate, I believe your campaign will go incredibly well.”

Bingo.

I tilted my head. “Vivian?” I asked. “Who’s that?”

Monroe’s eyes flashed for a moment, but he quickly smoothed it over. “Lady Everheart,” he said. “Slip of the tongue.”

“Right.” I pretended not to notice anything awry and thanked him for seeing me. Then, I turned and left.

I didn’t say anything else about it. Not to him, or to his Beta, or to Vivian. But I kept it all filed away very neatly- the whole ordeal with Vivian and the bank transfers and Monroe’s strange behavior and even the phone call

with the Beta.

I kept it all neatly organized, prepared to use it at a moment’s notice.

Because I was beginning to think that I very well might need to.

If the Alpha King had accepted some kind of bribe from Vivian to help her in this matter, even going so far as to change laws to accommodate the arrangement, then that was a bad look indeed. The sort of thing that, if revealed, could completely incriminate Monroe-and even make his whole law-change completely moot in a matter of seconds.
