Chapter 448
Dominic’s POV
I was only three days into playing house with a woman I planned to see in chains, and somehow, I had gotten good enough at it already that it scared me a little.
I let Vivian take my arm at breakfast. I answered her questions about the campaign like I actually wanted her opinion on any of it. I even let her sit close enough at dinner that Monroe’s whole traveling circus started treating us like a real couple. She kept her veil on, her “Lady Everheart” persona perfectly in place, but I knew what was underneath and it made me sick.
I pretended to be perfectly complacent with all of it, but all the while, I kept an eye on Monroe to see how he might react.
I kept thinking back to what she said when it all first happened. She said he didn’t know anything about the matter, but the way she said it made it seem like that wasn’t the case at all.
“Well,” he said when the mark was first announced. “I suppose love does funny things.”
That was it. He didn’t even seem surprised. In fact, he seemed quite pleased, far beyond the level of satisfaction from a simple matchmaking effort gone right. I got the distinct sense that maybe there was more in this for him than watching two wolves fall in love.
It piqued my interest, to say the least. The Alpha King had tried to set me up with “Lady Everheart” already, and now he looked satisfied, like a cat that got the cream.
Needless to say, when he called me to his room the next night to discuss business, I knew I had to use it as an opportunity to investigate. The timing with the sudden rule change, combined with this, was grounds enough to make me wonder if this had been his plan all along.
I got the distinct feeling that the Alpha King, the man who was supposed to be overseeing all the packs with a professional and unbiased eye, was more involved in this than anyone was letting on.
We had stopped at a roadside inn on the fourth night. The Alpha King had called me to his room, so I went. It was a good excuse to get away from Vivian for a little while, who wouldn’t seem to leave my side all fucking day.
I found Monroe’s Beta in the hallway outside the room. He didn’t see me yet, too busy pacing the hall with a phone pressed to his ear. Judging from the tone and the way his shoulders were hunched, he was arguing with
someone.
I slowed my steps and pretended to check my own phone. No calls or texts from Ellie, of course. I’d wondered if she had felt the bond partially severing. Probably. I hoped she would give me a chance between her hurt and anger to let me explain.
