Chapter 451
I thought about skipping tonight’s banquet for a long time. The last thing I wanted was to get another glimpse of Dominic and his new bride acting all lovey-dovey like I hadn’t poured my heart out to him like a fool.
But Goldenveil was small, and my father was the Alpha, and skipping the one event meant to honor a sitting Alpha King wouldn’t just embarrass me. It would embarrass him, in front of a man he needed on his side for reasons that had nothing to do with me.
So I went.
I asked Amelia and Nico to come with me, mostly because I didn’t trust myself to walk through those doors alone, and neither of them asked why. Amelia just nodded and helped braid my hair, and we went together, arm-
in arm.
The meeting house was packed by the time we arrived, the same crowd and noise and candlelight as always, except this time there was a dark presence at the head of the room that I desperately didn’t want to look at.
Vivian was sitting with her parents. My father was mingling, talking to the Alpha King, but she was there, and so was Dominic. I couldn’t see her face behind the veil, but I didn’t need to. I knew she was sneering at me, and besides-Dominic was staring at me enough for the both of them.
I pretended not to see him, ignoring his stare entirely, and found a spot against the wall. Nico brought me a glass of something dark and spiced without me asking. I drank it faster than I probably should have.
“You don’t have to stay,” Amelia murmured beside me. “We can go the second you want to.”
“I’m fine.”
She didn’t believe me, clearly, and she looked like she was about to say just that when Vivian’s voice cut across
the room.
-the wedding will be in the spring, I think,” Vivian was saying to some woman I didn’t recognize, one hand resting on Dominic’s arm like it belonged there. “Nothing too large. Just family, and whoever from the Council wants to attend. Dominic wants it small.” She smiled up at him. “Don’t you, darling?”
Darling.
The word made me sick.
Dominic said something back, but I shut it out before I could hear the words.
“They got engaged fast,” Nico muttered. Amelia elbowed him. He winced and glanced at me. “Sorry.”
