She was leaning against the brick wall with her arms wrapped around herself, looking up at the sky. The second she saw me, she pushed off the wall and started walking the other way.
“Ellie.”
“Don’t.” She didn’t slow down. “I don’t want to hear it, Dominic. I saw you. I saw both of you.”
I caught her wrist before she made it another step.
“Let go of me.”
“Not until you listen.” My grip wasn’t hard, just immovable. “Can you try not being stubborn as hell for, like, five minutes? Five minutes. That’s all I’m asking.”
Ellie’s eyes flashed bright and furious. “I don’t owe you five minutes.” Her tears caught the light, but they didn’t fall. She was too stubborn for that, too. “You had your five minutes. You had months of them. And again and again, I keep falling for the same bullshit, I keep letting history repeat-
“She drugged me.” I shoved the words out as quickly as I could go, desperate to make her understand. “That night, before the mark, I don’t remember agreeing to any of it, because I never did. I woke up with a bond I never asked for. But it’s not fully-formed. I can fix this.”
“Stop lying to me.” She wrenched her wrist, but I held on tight. She jabbed the finger of her free hand into my sternum. “I spent two lifetimes watching you choose her again and again, and this is no different!”
“Ellie.” I pulled on her wrist, tugging her forward so she stumbled into my chest. She gasped, pressing her hand into my chest, trying to shove away, but I encircled her waist with my other arm and held her fast. “Ellie, look at me. I’m not choosing Vivian. Not again. Do you understand me?”
“No. No, I-”
“I love you, Ellie. Only you.”
Her breath caught, and for a moment, she looked up at me. Her eyes shimmered like one of those tears might slip free, but she shut her eyes and shook her head. “I don’t believe you.”
“I don’t care if you don’t believe me. I’m telling the truth, Ellie. Look at me.”
“No!”
“Ellie!” I spun us so her back was pressed against the wall now, caged firmly between my body and the stone. The only way to go was up, toward the moon, and even that was clamping her down, forcing her to stay, and she
