Chapter 483
Ellie’s POV
As it turned out to no one’s surprise-Bastian made a far worse patient than his brother.
“Let’s go,” he said, no more than five minutes after I had bandaged his shoulder. He grunted, grinding his teeth as he stood, using the wall against his back as leverage.
“You need to recover,” I pointed out.
“I’ll recover on the way.”
Dominic shot me a look that spoke volumes without saying a single word out loud. This guy was Lycan through and through, even if he had mere drops of it in his DNA. I shook my head, knowing there was no use arguing, packed up my medical supplies, and followed behind.
This time, it was Dominic who took the front; Bastian allowed that much, at least. We carefully picked our way through the corridor, methodically checking for traps. It seemed we’d gotten through the worst of them, and eventually, we came across another slab door just like the first one that got us into this place.
This one was different, though. Instead of a riddle, there were five stone buttons set into the door, each one with its own symbol and pulsing with a faint greenish light.
We stopped, and I stepped forward, studying them. Each one was carved with its own symbol: a wave, a tree, a mountain, a wolf, and an eight-pointed star.
“Oh, good,” Dominic said. “Another riddle.”
“A lock,” Bastian corrected. He shuffled closer and swept his light across the buttons. “Seems simple enough. Press them in the right order and the door opens.”
I swallowed. “What if we press them in the wrong order?”
Nobody answered that.
Bastian flipped through his notebook to his sketches from the ruins. The same five symbols had run along the old altar stone up top: star, wolf, mountain, tree, wave. He tapped the page. “Same five. Same order. Has to be.”
It sounded right to me. It sounded right to all of us right now, as exhausted as we were.
Bastian pressed the star first. The button sank into the wall with a heavy clunk, and something behind the stone began ticking like a clock winding backward. He pressed the wolf. The mountain. The tree. The wave.
The ticking stopped.
Suddenly, six tiny holes opened on either side of the walls next to us.
“DOWN!”
Bastian’s shout and the arrows came at the same time. I hit the floor with Dominic’s weight crashing over me, and the air above us turned into a hissing, clattering mess, arrow shafts shattering against the stones. One buried itself in Bastian’s pack an inch from his spine. Then it was over just as quickly as it had begun, and the four buttons popped back outward, pulsing lazily once more.
1/2
Dominic lifted his head. “Well, I guess that answers Ellie’s question.”
