“Cover your-“Bastian coughed. “-mouths…”

I gasped and pressed my sleeve over my nose, but didn’t matter. The sweetness was already in me, sliding down my throat and unspooling like a warm thread through my chest. The chamber began to pulse around me, the walls breathing, ebbing and flowing like a living creature.

I giggled. “The room is…”

“Breathing,” Dominic said.

I flopped down, lowering my hand. Dominic was swaying over me, and I tugged his sleeve, smiling and patting the spot next to me. “Warm,” I whispered.

He grinned and plopped down beside me.

“I fixed it,” Bastian mumbled. “Mom. Mom, I fixed the-the thing. The ledger. Don’t look at me like that…”

I couldn’t have said who moved first. Dominic’s hand fisted in my hair and my knee slid over his hip, and we went down together onto the cold-no, warm-stone in a tangle of coats and rope, laughing into each other’s mouths. His lips dragged along my jaw to the scar on my neck, and the heat of it echoed back through the bond and hit me like a slap.

Somewhere behind us, Bastian told his mother he’d fed the goats. He didn’t have goats. I didn’t care.

Dominic rolled me under him, my hands finding their way up the back of his sweater, and over his shoulder the star was watching us-

I blinked at the door. The buttons swam in and out of focus, creating a pulsing, living scene. Waves cresting against the beach. A band of trees along the shore. Mountains above the trees. The wolf standing on the peaks. And the star shining in the sky.

Bottom to top. Sea to sky. The whole world, in order.

“Ellie,” Dominic breathed against my throat.

“The buttons are a picture.”

“Mm. Pretty.”

“Dominic.” I shoved at his chest, but he was too busy burying his face in my breasts to notice, so I wriggled out from under him instead, and he flopped over with a wounded sound. The floor tilted when I moved. Fine. I didn’t need to stand. Crawling worked.

I dragged myself across the chamber on my hands and knees, giggles bubbling up my throat for no reason, holding on to the one clear thought I had left.
