The story made sense. It was logical. Perhaps Ellie’s Seeker ability had gone off, when she got trapped on the other side of the tunnel, directing her to eat something she hsouldn’t have-that strange fruit, maybe. Perhaps she found a way back to us and snapped when she saw Stephanie.

But it didn’t fill in the gaps. Like why Bastian and I had passed out and why there was a gap in both of our

memories.

Something was off about this.

“She needs medical attention,” Bastian said, turning to me. “We have to get my mother down the mountain. Now.”

“I’m not leaving Ellie.”

Stephanie shifted against the wall. “If she’s as far gone as what I saw, she’s dangerous. To herself most of all. You’ll need more than one person to bring her back, and I can’t make that climb without help. I’ll need both of

“I said no.”

The Alpha in my voice filled the stairwell. Something crossed her face, quick, there and gone before I could read it, and then she lowered her eyes and nodded like a tired, injured woman accepting bad news.

Bastian looked at his mother. Then at the dark passages below. I knew the decision was killing him.

“Can you take her down by yourself?” I asked. “I can get you to the entrance of the caves. But I’m staying here to look for Ellie.”

Bastian hesitated, then nodded. “Yeah. I can get her down.”

Before we started up, I laid Ellie’s coat out on her bedroll with the last of the food and water, in case she found her way back before I did.

Getting an injured woman up through that mountain took about as long as I expected. We took turns carrying her, moving slowly, checking for traps we may have missed on the way in. When we got to where the caves were more natural, not manmade, it was even slower. It was nearly impossible to get Stephanie through the pinch in her current condition, Bastian pulling her from ahead while I pushed her from behind.

But finally, we made it, and daylight flooded into the caves.

We came out onto the summit, the sun so bright it burned my eyes. The sky was clear, the whole valley glittering below us, the village a speck in the distance. Ten steps from the cave mouth, the slope fell away toward the band of cliffs we’d climbed past on the way up. The wind was light. The sky was clean. Good conditions for getting back down. But I was staying.

Bastian settled his mother against a rock and came back to me, digging his headlamp out of his pack and pressing it into my hand.

“Be careful,” he said. “I’ll come back with help as soon as I can.”
