Ellie’s POV

Black veins were crawling up my arms. Thin dark lines branching out from under my sleeve, spreading across the back of my hand like ink dropped in water.

I knew those veins. I’d watched them climb my body once before, in a bed one lifetime away, while my lungs slowly emptied and nobody came.

I stopped running and scrubbed at my wrist. The lines smeared, faded, and crawled right back.

“It’s the mushroom,” I said out loud. “Wolfsbane doesn’t spread this fast. You’d know. You’re a healer.”

My chest tightened anyway. I coughed, and I tasted copper, and I couldn’t tell if it was real blood or something my mind had added for authenticity. Honestly, the not knowing was the worst part of all of it.

I kept moving.

The footsteps started a few corridors later. Wet. Bare feet slapping against stone.

“Sister…”

“You’re dead,” I called back without turning around. “You died in a cell.”

“You were supposed to drink it…”

Steel flashed at the edge of my light. A pale gray hand drove a knife out of a doorway as I passed. I screamed and stumbled back. The blade went through me like smoke. It didn’t matter. The old scar on my back burned, the one I hadn’t woken up with in this life but still felt sometimes like the ghost of it.

For a moment I was on a marble floor again, warm blood spreading beneath me, listening to the shouts as Dominic’s terrified face hovered above me.

“You’re not,” I gasped, shoving off the wall. “Keep walking.”

“But you are.”
