The Luna Queen's Rebirth (Ellie and Dominic) novel Chapter 505

Chapter 505

Dominic’s POV

My fist plunged through the final layer of snow and met cold air. Sweet, cold air.

I dug the rest of the way up, gasping, pulling myself out inch by inch until my face found the cold sting of the wind, then my neck, then the rest of me. Free from the mound of snow, I collapsed onto my back, chest heaving.

Alive. Cold. Soaking wet. In pain from injuries I didn’t even want to think about yet. But alive.

The cliff face above me went up and up, gray rock streaked with ice, the summit hidden somewhere past its edge. Falling, it had felt endless. From down here, the truth was less impressive. Fifty feet, maybe sixty, straight down into a snowdrift that had broken my fall.

Standing hurt. Everything hurt, but breathing hurt specifically, a hot stab low on my left side every time I inhaled. I didn’t stop to examine it out in the open. My clothes were soaked through, the wind was already finding its way into my bones, and if Stephanie decided to look over that edge, I had no intention of letting her know I was still alive when she did.

There was an overhang thirty paces down the cliff base, a lip of rock jutting out over a ledge. I shuffled over, climbed up, and folded myself into the pocket beneath it, out of the wind and out of sight from above.

There, breathless and exhausted, I allowed myself to take stock.
