There was no response. She still couldn’t hear me. But that was okay. All I had to do was get close enough to contact her, and then I was going to find her.

That was the part Stephanie had clearly never planned for, I realized. She didn’t stop for a second to think about how my bond with Ellie had transcended two timelines, and it would transcend this, too.

She also didn’t know how strong Ellie was. How strong we both were.

The universe had already brought us back together more times than I could count. The death, the divorce, every little thing in between and after. This was no different, and that was what Stephanie didn’t know about us, because she had never taken the time to get to know us.

Assuming that Ellie would remain in the tunnels until she died, too, with no way out and no one to rescue her.

I wanted to move right away. My wolf wanted it. But I held back for now. I only had one body, one working set of ribs, and a cliff I couldn’t climb standing between me and her. If Stephanie was still up there, I couldn’t risk running into her and getting shoved again, or whatever other tricks she had up her sleeve.

So I stayed under the overhang through the rest of the morning, tucked out of the wind, and let my wolf work on the rib. The healing came on as a slow, spreading warmth, an itch deep under the skin, and I dozed in and out of it with my chin on my chest. I ate snow for water. I thought about the food I’d left on Ellie’s bedroll and wished I had snagged at least a granola bar for myself, but I’d live.

Twice I thought I heard something from above and went still, listening. Both times, it was only the wind.
