Chapter 517
Ellie’s POV
White-hot pain tore across my cheek.
I threw my arms up before the second swipe could reach my eyes and twisted sideways, curling around my middle on instinct. Another blow rained down on the back of my head, dragging through my hair and making tears spring to my eyes.
“You RUINED it!” Stephanie screamed above me, spit flying, her claws snagging in my sleeve, my collar, everywhere. “Everything I spent all these years building! You ruined EVERYTHING!”
“That’s enough.”
Dominic’s hand shot out, hauling Stephanie off of me with one arm. Terence was there, too, grabbing her arm while several Goldenveil warriors shoved through the crowd, weapons drawn, eyes wide. Gasping, I sprawled onto my back, the sky above me bright and blue and a little red from the blood dripping into my eye.
“Ellie.” Dominic pulled me up off the ground and against his chest, one arm locked around me. He tilted my chin with two fingers, turning my face to inspect the cut. “Hold still. You’re bleeding.”
“I’m okay.” My cheek throbbed in time with my pulse. “I’m okay.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened. Behind him, Stephanie was now thrashing wildly against the guards, her bandaged hand clawing at the air, her hair coming loose from its knot. There was nothing left of the composed Luna who poured tea and smiled at ceremonies. Her eyes had gone black from edge to edge, like one of the monsters I saw in the caves on those mushrooms.
“Twenty years!” she howled. “I gave this pack twenty years! I came from NOTHING and I built this family with my bare hands-”
“Stephanie.” My father limped toward her with his palms out like one might approach a wild, angry animal.” Stephanie, darling, stop. Look at me-”
“Don’t darling me!” Stephanie hissed. Her black eyes fixed on me. “You. You crawled out of nowhere wearing your dead mother’s face, and it took you a matter of months. Months! The long-lost daughter. The miracle healer. You had the whole village eating out of the palm of your hand in weeks. And now the Alpha King is breathing down our necks because of you and your mate and your prophecy-” Her words cracked apart as she pointed a trembling, half-severed finger at Terence. “He named you heir. Do you understand what I gave up? Bastian was supposed to-my son was supposed to-”
“Stephanie, that’s enough,” my father said.
“IT WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH!”
Off to the side, Amelia had Eli’s face pressed into her shoulder, her hand cupped over his ear. Nico stood beside them, frozen, watching his mother come apart in front of the entire pack.
My face burned where her claws had caught me. I stepped out of Dominic’s arms.
“I never wanted any of this.” My words came out steady, somehow, even though my stomach felt sick. “I didn’t come to Goldenveil for a title. I didn’t ask to be named heir, and I don’t want to be Alpha. I never did.” I took a
