Ellie’s POV

I did the stitches up myself in the clinic mirror. Dominic held the lamp and looked away the whole time. The male had fallen off a mountain without blinking, but apparently a needle going through my eyebrow was where he drew the line.

“You should see someone,” he said, jaw tight. “For all these injuries.”

I shot him a look in the reflection. “From who? Another healer hundreds of miles from here? Or should I ask

Eli?”

Dominic fell silent at that, although his mouth twitched into a faint smile on one side, which was more than I could have asked for.

It was late by the time I stepped back outside. The village should have been asleep at this hour, but half of the windows were still lit, and people were still clustered on their porches, murmuring in low voices. What was left of the pyre had been doused hours ago, but the whole square still smelled like smoke.

I found Bastian exactly where Nico said he might be.

He was sitting alone in the middle of one of the bridges, his legs dangling over the edge, forearms resting on the lower rail. Same clothes as this afternoon. He didn’t turn around as I walked out onto the boards, but the boards creaked a little at my approach, so I knew he heard me.

I sat down next to him and let my own legs hang over the water. For a while, neither of us said anything.

“Dad’s still at the cells,” he said after a few minutes. “He’ll probably be there all night. She’ll be behind bars for a while. Months, at least, while we figure out what to do with her. There’s talk of a full tribunal being held, since she’s the Luna.”

I nodded. The stream moved along quietly beneath our feet, half-frozen in the winter chill, but it never fully froze over, not with the amount of water passing through.

“Bastian.” My throat felt thick as I spoke. “I’m so sorry for everything that’s happened. If I had never come to Goldenveil, none of this would have-”
