Chapter 530
I realized I was grinning so hard my cheeks hurt.
“The tribunal’s set for June,” he added a little quieter. I didn’t have to ask whose. “Dad’s ready. As ready as he’ll get.” He turned his spoon over once, then set it down in his bowl with a soft clink. “She asks about you. I thought you should know that.”
I scoffed and looked away. “I’m sure she’s still fuming.”
Bastian sighed. “Her anger deflates a little more every day, but it’ll never fade entirely. It was baked into her from childhood. Not much we can do about it now.”
Dinner that night should have been perfect. It nearly was. Bastian walked us through the unveiling schedule between bites, and I was so excited I barely touched my plate, and the baby kicked through all of it like she was excited, too.
Dominic laughed in the right places. He asked good questions. But he checked his phone four times, and his answers kept coming out a moment late, and when I reached for him through the bond I found the same thing I’d found on the sidewalk outside the ultrasound. A knot of worry, shoved down where he thought I wouldn’t
look.
I’d let it go that day. I didn’t plan on letting it go twice.
I waited until the plates were cleared before I finally said it.
“Dominic. Tell us what’s going on.”
He looked at me. “There’s nothing going on.”
I folded my arms and looked at Bastian. My brother shrugged, a little awkward, and admitted, “You’re not acting like yourself.”
Dominic sighed, passing his hand over his face, which had been looking wearier than usual. Finally, he stood, silently nodding toward his study. Bastian and I exchanged glances before we followed.
He shut the door behind us. Bastian took one of the chairs. I took the edge of the desk, hands folded over my belly, and waited while Dominic stood at the window with his back to us, the event grounds lit up gold below.
