Chapter 531
Ellie’s POV
“You don’t want me to go?” I whispered.
Dominic’s face crumpled. His hands tightened around mine. “Of course I want you to go,” he said. “I just think it would be safer for you and the baby if you didn’t-”
I pulled my hands out of his before he could finish.
“Ellie.”
“I need to think,” I said coolly. There were a million thoughts swirling around my head, and none of them would come out right. I knew that. So I walked out. Bastian said my name quietly as I passed his chair. I didn’t trust myself to look at either of them, so I didn’t.
My feet carried me down the hall, out the back doors, and into the field. The chairs sat in their long white rows, appearing almost ghostly in the dusky light. The stage stood at the far end with its lights strung but off at this hour, a bare pole off to the side waiting for Goldenveil’s banner. Tomorrow, there would be hundreds of people out here. Historians. Alphas. Cameras. My brother at the podium, showing the world what had been sleeping under that mountain all this time.
And me. Watching from a window, apparently.
I walked the center aisle with my hands on my belly and let myself be angry, because anger was easier than the hurt sitting underneath it. That library was mine. The Seeker had walked me through the dark to find it, step by step, and I’d paid for every one of those steps. My blood ran through that mountain. My family’s name was going up on that stage. And my mate wanted me home with the doors locked.
I knew he thought he was only being practical, but it was so much more than that. Before the divorce, it had been the same–the control. The need to monitor everything I did, like I was some kind of breakable object to keep on a shelf.
Maybe he wasn’t doing it on purpose now or with the same intentions as before, but it still hurt. It was a reminder of everything we had been through. And another reminder that, despite everything we had survived, despite everything I had survived, he still thought I needed to be locked away.
The sun went down. The caterers’ vans pulled out one by one. When the last of the light faded, I finally went inside.
Dominic had the good sense not to follow me until bedtime. I heard his voice speaking in low tones with Bastian through the walls until nine o’clock. By the time I emerged from my bath, he was coming into the room, looking even more tired than before, his tie loosened and the first two buttons of his shirt undone.
“Ellie.”
I walked over to the bed and fluffed my pillow. “Did you have a nice time with Bastian?” I asked curtly.
“Yes,” he said. “It would have been nicer with you there.”
“I needed some air.”
