Ellie’s POV

“Dominic-“I dug my heels in, one hand flying to my belly, and wrenched my wrists out of his grip. He didn’t seem to notice. He was already turning his face up to the lanterns, swaying, his eyes shining and huge.
“They’re singing,” he breathed. “Ellie, listen. The lanterns are singing. They know your name.”
“Look at me.” I caught his jaw in one hand and forced him to look down, then held up the other hand. “Count my fingers.”
I held up three. My mate kissed them, one after another, laughed like I’d told the funniest joke in the world, and twirled away into the crowd before I could grab him again.
“Dominic!”
He was already gone, disappearing between a laughing woman and two males trying to waltz with each other.
Everywhere I looked, it was more of the same. The violinist had abandoned her violin to an Alpha who was holding it up to his ear and talking to it. Sarah was laying flat in the grass, laughing at the sky. Abigail had crowned herself Queen with a flower centerpiece. Near the dessert table, Dominic’s Beta stood at rigid attention, arms crossed, swaying like a sapling in the wind.
“No one,” he slurred solemnly as I passed, “touches the cake.”
Five hundred guests. Every Alpha on the continent worth knowing, every Luna, every guard and server and historian, all of them flushed and glassy-eyed and giggling at the stars, and me-one healer, seven months pregnant, outnumbered by insanity.
I found Lucas in the crowd, blond hair standing out amongst the dark tuxedoes. “Please be normal,” I whispered as I hurried up to him. He was sitting at a table, a plate of half-eaten food in front of him, facing away from me.
“Lucas!” I breathed. I grabbed his shoulder and turned him-only to see that his pupils, too, were the size of
quarters.
“Eeellliiiie!” He stood, knocking his chair over, and flung his arms around me so tight I couldn’t breathe, and it hurt my belly. “You looked so beautiful up there. Radiant. I love you so much.” His lips found my forehead, my cheeks, my nose. “I love you. Please marry me.”
