Chapter 540
But there was one thing Monroe didn’t consider. One thing I’d kept a secret to everyone outside my inner circle.
The Seeker.
I shut my eyes and reached down for that familiar pull, the one that had walked me through the dark step by step when there had been no light and no map and no hope of finding anything at all.
Find me something that can fix this, I thought.
The Seekr buzzed to life. I’d spent months honing it, studying it, practicing it until it was second nature. It came easily now, a flood of emotions and tethers pulling me toward the forest.
“Stay here,” I told the guards. “Make sure no one hurts themselves.”
I kicked off my shoes and jogged, or rather waddled with my belly, across the lawn. The forest lay dark and quiet, trees swaying in the evening breeze. The Seeker pulled me there, a shimmering rope stretched taut across the distance. I went past Abigail and her flower crown, past Sarah making grass angels on her back, past Lucas, now shoveling the rest of his food into his face and smearing most of it over his cheeks, past Bastian and Edmund, who were playing patty cake on the stage.
Finally, I went past Dominic. My mate, spinning lonesomely in the grass, smiling wildly, staring up at the moon.
I paused for a moment. My heart ached, seeing him like this. All these months of hard work, and it had wound up like this.
“I’m going to fix this,” I whispered, then turned and took off into the forest.
The forest was dark and quiet, almost too quiet after all that noise. And yet I never stumbled, never wavered. The pull threaded me between the trunks like it had done it a thousand times, left around the path, down a little slope, ducking under branches I couldn’t even see, until I heard water.
The creek, thin and silver, was running over stones at the bottom of the slope. The moon came through the canopy in pale shafts, and there, on the near bank, growing in a patch, was a cluster of small white flowers with silver-veined leaves, petals shut tightly for the night.
